Formula fed 5 week old fighting feedings

my 5 week old has just recently become very difficult to feed. She has been formula fed since she was 4 days old, eating the same formula she does now. She usually gets to the point of crying for her bottle because she goes from 0 to starving very quickly. Over the past couple days she has started fighting her feeding. She will eat the first ounce without issue, then she will start squirming and fussing while eating. When she does this I burp her and sometimes get a burp, but not always. She does this multiple times throughout her feeding. Sometimes she won't finish her bottle and within 15 minutes - 1 hour she's screaming for more. This is especially difficult at night when she falls asleep in addition to squirming and fussing. Frequently I can't get her to finish her bottle at night. During the day she is eating 3.5oz every 2-3 hours and has been for over a week. At night we are offering 3.5oz when she wants, usually once in the middle of the night after 4-6 hours of sleeping. Before that she was eating 3oz every 2-3 hours without issue. She is a very gassy baby, so she started gas drops a couple days ago. The gas drops seem to have helped with her gas. I don't put the gas drops in her formula, so that's not why she's rejecting it. Is this something I need to call the pediatrician about? Does anyone have any advice? Help! This is very frustrating!

  • I should also add, she is gaining weight perfectly, not spitting up much, has plenty of wet diapers and has a giant poop every other day (as she has for a while).

  • It sounds like it could be silent reflux. I would probably call the pedi.

  • Yeah that's almost exactly what my BF LO was doing - weight and diapers were fine, but crying and pushing away even when he had been hungry. We just started Zantac for reflux this week, and combined with sleeping in the swing or RNP instead of the crib, he seems much happier already.

  • Thanks mommies. Will give the pedi a call on Monday.
  • DS was given ranitidine for silent reflux. He's gaining weight like crazy and demanding bottles but over the past two weeks has spit up like crazy which he rarely did before. Hopefully this helps!
  • Has anyone tried gripe water for reflux?
  • My DD does this but we give bm in bottles. Gripe water hasn't worked for us. Would you please update when you speak with your ped?

  • Yep, sounds like silent reflux. My baby was doing the exact same thing. Doc prescribed Zantac and even though they said it could take 2 wks to work it's already helping a ton after 2 days!

  • Update, pedi said: because my LO doesn't react like that after every feeding and it differs day to day, to keep baby more upright while feeding and after feeding, burp frequently, after every ounce of formula, and put baby to sleep in more upright position. She recommended propping bassinet up on one end, sleep in swing, RnP, or car seat. Pedi said my baby's case should hopefully fade away in the next couple months once her digestive system matures. If it gets worse I am supposed to take her back and get meds, but doc didn't want to medicate if not necessary, so we'll see how it goes. Also, we were giving LO little remedies gas drops, and stopped them and switched to mommy's bliss gripe water and it seems to have improved. Hope this helps others! Thanks for all your advice!
