Breastfeeding

cracked nipples & painful feeding

Hey ladies! I am a STM, and just had our second little girl on 10/28. I thought I was doing great, hadn't needed to pump, supplement or introduce a bottle! This was a great high for me, as with our first due to everything my body was doing it took 3 days for even colostrum to come so she started with a bottle before me.
Well as f yesterday my nipples are so cracked and sore that putting my LO to latch makes me break down into tears due to the pain. I have an appt for Monday with a lacation nurse but was wondering if anyone could give me any advice to get through the weekend, so I don't feel so defeated. TIA Ladies!! Sorry so long!

Re: cracked nipples & painful feeding

  • I got a few pieces of advice that have been godsends to me! Hope some of them help

    - they usually say sore nipples has to do with the latch.. la leche league has so many awesome videos and info to make sure you have a deep latch they also have leaders for almost every area I emailed mine and she insisted I call her to problem solve they are amazing resources!
    - try expressing a little milk and rub around your nipple... a nurse told me about this remedy for sore nipples and I've used it instead of a Lanolin
    - try soaking your nipples in a hot bath
    - I'm not positive but I would think if you try nursing side by side with you LO it would be less strain on your nipple the LLL has so much good info on making sure your latch is correct and gives you so position ideas
    - prop up baby on pillows until they are eye level with your nipple
    - I know some advise against this but in the beginning I timed my feeding set small goals in the beginning

Hope some of these help! My LO is 1 month so I've been looking up breastfeeding info non-stop! Good luck!

(She is a little premature) . I have tried the milk and its helps get me through one feeding but not the next, i will try the hot water though!! Thanks a bunch!
