Abnormal (double) baby tooth

LO's second bottom tooth is about half way in now and we just noticed that it looks much wider than the tooth next to it that is fully in. I didn't think much of it though until I showed it to the pedi (not our regular pedi) that we saw for a cold today. She confirmed that the tooth looks abnormal and that it could be two teeth that are coming in fused as one. All she said was that they would do a dental evaluation at 12 months (LO will be 8 months later this week). Anyone have experience with this? Should I be worried about his permanent teeth or any other dental/mouth issues?

Re: Abnormal (double) baby tooth

  • A friend on my other board has a daughter with that. We have a dentist on the board and she said it was nbd. That it wouldn't affect the permanent teeth underneath.

  • Thank you! I've just never heard of this happening before, but it's reassuring to hear that a dentist (even if it's a random internet dentist) said it wasn't a big deal. I'll try not to worry about LO's freak tooth until we see a dentist at 12 months :)
  • I had this with my bottom teeth, and when my permanent teeth came in I only got one. Nobody can tell unless I say something bc my teeth are very close together!
  • Well my 9 yo sons top tooth(one of the big teeth in the front) came in like that. He ended up having to get it capped though. His dentist said its almost avoidable bc cavities can easily be formed there. He was 3 when he had it done. Very traumatic at the time but since then he has no fear of dentists lol.
