2nd Trimester

C-section or Vaginal birth with Twins

Hello :)

This is my first pregnancy and we are expecting twins.  I've always wanted to have a vaginal/natural birth.  I know with multiples it's not always MY choice. I was wondering if anyone has been able to have a vaginal birth with multiples.  I know it's not really up to me but on how things are looking, closer I get to my due date but just thought I'd ask.

TIA!!!!

  • Oh thanks!!  Didnt even see that board.  Appreciate it :)

  • My previous (first pregnancy) was identical girls, and baby B was breech. I went to a large hospital and was told only two doctors were willing to let me try to deliver them vaginally- (especially because of the breech part) and so when they were working back to back I was induced. I had an epidural (which they must place due to possible complications and an emergency c-section is required) and I delivered them in the OR (again, just in case) but after only being in the OR for 18 minutes I delivered twin A vaginally and 3 minutes later I delivered Twin B vaginally and breech. It is POSSIBLE, and I feel this only happened my way because I advocated for a vaginal birth and was willing to be induced. I was adamant I did NOT want a C-section and although it was my first pregnancy and I had NO idea what I was doing I was very strongly pushy about vaginal and I did in fact do it. Everyone was healthy and perfect :) You CAN do this!

  • I concur with what PP said about the multiples board.

And just to answer your question: check around with doctors/hospital policy on what they will allow. My OB/hospital would try to attempt a vaginal delivery with only Baby A vertex. Unfortunately, she was only vertex for about two weeks of the entire pregnancy and now I am looking at a C section.

  • Definitely ask around doctors/hospitals in your area, because it will vary widely. It will also depend on how your pregnancy progresses. Anecdotally, my best friend delivered hers vaginally, but in an OR and they did have to use a vacuum for Baby B.

  • My sister delivered her twins vaginally. She had to hunt for a doctor who would allow this though (we're in MA).

On the other hand, a coworker of mine attempted vaginal birth. First one came out vaginally, and the other one flipped in the process and had to go in for a c-section for baby B.

  • I delivered twins vaginally! My doctor always promoted me having them vaginally if they were positioned correctly.  They came at 34+6 weeks due to preeclampsia and cholestasis issues.  Their delivery was dramatically easier than it was when I had just my daughter. I think it just depends on your OB and if the twins are in the correct positions
  • I know people do it and are doing it more and more!!  Check out a website/facebook page called Birth Without Fear.  They have a bunch of stories and even triplets that were born vaginally.  Don't give up unless it really just doesn't make sense.  Good luck!!
