Cloth Diapering

Clueless- Vaseline use with CD?

Hi,

I'm expecting number 2. With DD, we did 100% disposables. My husband REFUSED to consider cloth. But, I've been advocating we attempt it part time with this baby. We don't have anything for cloth diapering, so I'm not convincing him really in the cost area. I can guilt trip him on the environmental impact, but I think the main thing is "better for baby". Anyways, with our dd we used vaseline on her with EVERY SINGLE diaper change. Just a dab, usually, but sometimes we'd smother her (especially before bed each night). We did this for about the first 14 months and she's never had a single rash on her bottom. My dh believes its because of the vaseline and he asked if it would be difficult to wash out of cloth diapers. So, anyone have any insight on this?

thanks in advance for your help!

  • Waxelene.

But... wtf?  I have never heard of this in my life.  Also, my baby is 5 months, in cloth, and never had a rash either.  So... yeah.

  • Thanks. They actually taught us to do this in the hospital when she was born. She's 2.5 now.
  • Vaseline will cause cloth diapers to repel, rather than absorb. There are lots of CD-safe creams on the market, or you can make your own.
  • Agreed on the no to vaseline but yes to all the cloth diaper safe creams. We use Grandma El's, but I'm sure the others are just as good/better.

Like pp said, rashes may not even be an issue for you!

  • Okay, awesome- thanks for the input!
  • I've never heard of using vaseline to keep away diaper rash, though I guess it makes sense. If you change the diaper regularly there's less a chance of a rash. My oldest only had one rash that was caused by poo when we started solid foods. My second had a few more that we don't know a direct cause of, but we didn't do anything preventative with either.

As for advice, I agree with pp if you feel like you have to put something on the baby. Otherwise, I would just treat if/when the rash happens.
