Pregnant after IF

High risk?

Is anyone here high risk? I'm now having to go in every other week and then 3 times a week at 32 weeks. I'm so nervous and upset about it. I'm high risk bc of my hbp (had it pre pg) and hypothyroid and I just found out I failed my one hour glucose test and have to go back for the 3 hour :( I feel like such a failure and I'm just worrying over all of these health issues. What was your experience with the 3 hour glucose?

Re: High risk?

  • I am not high risk, but I am at risk to be so. Does that make sense? I have a lot of potential issues that my midwives are being proactive about to help reduce issues. But I had to go early for my glucose test, going for a second one soon. Had an appointment with a nutritionist, have a consult with an OB, an anestelogist. Going to be having more ultrasounds than usual.

Don't feel like a failure! Just be grateful that nowadays we have the technology to deal with these issues. If not for modern medicine by DD probably wouldn't be here. I had scary HBP near the end of my last pregnancy, so I understand a little.

In my area they don't do 3 hour glucose test but I have done 2 hour. Basically required fasting and a higher sugar drink.

  • I'm only 14w today, & I don't have much experience with 1 or 3 hour glucose tests.  I do believe I had glucose tested at some point during an early morning draw at Quest.  The phlebotomist advised it was a good thing I had fasted before the test, even though I was not instructed to do so, as not fasting can alter the test results, requiring a more rigorous test (I'm assuming this would be the 1 hour or 3 hour tests you're referring to).  Sorry, I can't provide much insight.

I was high risk before I even started just for being AMA (37.. and soon 38).  Now that I'm having twins, I'm more high risk.  I'm also hypothyroid, but since its mild, I was led to believe that shouldn't be such a big concern.  I go to an OB, MFM and endo regularly.

Right now, since all is still looking pretty good, I find the extra appointments reassuring.  As the pregnancy progresses, and my visits become more frequent, I can see me moving to nervous/upset like you feel now.

  • Don't feel like a failure!!  I don't have experience being high risk but I did fail the 1 hour with my last pregnancy, but only by a few points.  The 3 hour one really isn't that bad.  Just bring stuff to do with you as it is a long wait!  I made sure to do it super early too since I couldn't eat.  I actually failed one of those 3 draws as well, but overall, I passed.

Don't be so hard on yourself!!

  • I am considered high risk.  I failed my 1 hour and 3 hour glucose tests and have gestational diabetes.  Don't feel like a failure- it happens to lots of women, and it's all about what you do with the information once you have it that determines your success.  GD can be managed in many cases with diet and finger sticks to help you learn what you can and can't eat.  GD doesn't discriminate either- I was 130# prior to pregnancy and have gained 19# and still got it (I think due to PCOS).  It's all about management of diet, exercise and you'll get a few extra growth scans later in your pregnancy to check your LO's weight to ensure he/ she isn't growing too big for a vaginal delivery.  At 34 weeks, our LO was only 4.5#, which was right on track.  You can do it.  Go home and talk to you DH, make a plan for how you're going to manage this and stick to it.  GOOD LUCK!

  • I'm semi-high risk. I have fibroids so I have a growth scan every 3-4 weeks. They also check my cervix at these appointments. I've had different surgeries in the past to remove the fibroids & they are just being extra cautious. I also failed the 1HR glucose. I passed the 3HR but it was a PITA sitting there for that long! Make sure your phone is charged up, bring your charger & grab a good book!

  • I'm high risk because of the medicine I need to take to thin my blood. I haven't done the glucose test but I'll tell you that the positive of being high risk is extra chances to check on baby! Their machines are WAY better than my regular ob gyn and it's an awesome experience each time. :)
