I feel silly not knowing this, but...

I spot for 3 or 4 days before I get a cramps and a heavy period/need to use a tampon. Does day 1 of my period start when I begin spotting or when I need a tampon?

What @piccyami said. Also, you should still make a note of the days you spot.
