3rd Trimester

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

Any thoughts? Does it work? Who's tried it? I've heard many different things

Re: Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

  • I've been drinking 2 cups a day of Yogi Brand red raspberry leaf tea since about 20 weeks. I'm a FTM so I can't say if it'll make any difference, but my thought is that it definitely doesn't hurt to try.

  • It's hard to say whether it works in a one-off situation. Maybe labour would've been the same without, who knows. But I've read about some studies that suggest it isn't associated with any negative outcomes and may reduce chances of certain interventions and shorten the length of the 2nd and 3rd stage of labour. My view is it can't hurt. I'm drinking it to help with iron and certain vitamins as well.

  • Just lurking here, but wanted to say I really think it does help, both in labor and with postpartum.  With my first I drank the tea and with my second I took the capsules and sometimes drank the tea.  My second labor was significantly faster than my first, though that's usually the case.  Here's where I think it really helped was after.  My ute shrank down really fast.  With my first I remember my postpartum nurse checking me, then shaking her head and saying, "I can't believe you just had a baby, your ute is shrinking down so fast!" With my second my MW warned me that the after pains would be more intense because with each baby your ute has to work harder and harder to clamp down, but I found just the opposite, cramps were less the second time.  So yes, I think it does help to tone your ute.

Also my cousin-in-law used it with her second pregnancy and her doctor was impressed with how quickly she was recovering in the hospital.  She told the doctor about the supplement and he was so interested, he wrote it down so he could read more about it.
  • Not sure if this means it works, but I asked my OB and he told me his wife (who is also an OB) used it while she was pregnant. He didn't say it works or doesn't work, but he didn't discourage its use at all... And if OBs wanted to use it, I guess they at least thought it merited a try.

  • I have a nurse coworker who used to be a doula and she said that there's no real proof whether or not it works. I also have another coworker who didn't start drinking it til after 37 weeks since it's known to cause preterm labor. I have done some research myself and I was surprised by all the information I found. I definitely want to try it now. I'm almost 38 weeks and I'm definitely ready to be done.
  • Also has anyone heard of pineapple working to jump start labor?

It's just been making my heartburn worse! So acidic.

I've been making some strong RRL/nettles tea. It tastes horrible, so I take it like medicine. Hope it's helpful.

  • Pineapple did nothing but give me gas and I ate 2 within 2 days... Also the tea hasn't done anything I just keep drinking it because it's supposed to help with labor pain and shorten labor... hopefully it does!!! Thanks ladies!
  • There's just no way to know if it works. Every woman and baby and birth is different. My mom never drank any red raspberry anything but had a quick, easy labor with both of her kids. I'm sure there are moms who drank the tea religiously and ended up not laboring effectively. I'm with you though, it couldn't hurt.

I'm a warm-drink-aholic and always have several cups of tea a day. So during pregnancy I've been having Davidson's organic rooibos, Traditional Medicinals "Pregnancy Tea", and the occasional cup of whatever sounds good at the time. I probably have 50 different teas in my cabinet at home. I've been thinking about getting some red raspberry leaf and nettles to mix in there now that I'm in the 3rd trimester. I've always been under the impression that to get the effects of red raspberry leaf you have to be drinking a few cups a day since the 2nd trimester since it is used to tone the uterus, but maybe that's wrong.

  • I drank RRL tea and ate dates everyday in my third trimester. I had to be induced at 41 weeks, BUT my labour was extremely quick, especially for a first timer and induction.

I was 5 cm dialated when I went in for my induction, I was put on the minimum amount of oxitocin at 10 am, they bumped it up by 1 level at 11 am and I was in full on labour before noon. I asked for an epidural around 12:30 pm and it was just setting in when my baby went into distress and they realized I was at 10 cm and my baby was already into my birth canal. 10 minutes of pushing and he was born at 1:40 pm.

All the nurses were shocked at how fast I went. Might just be my body, but it could have been the tea and/or dates.
