Trying to Get Pregnant

Ovulation Predictor

My husband and I are planning on trying out first IUI this month. My doctor has me doing OPK twice a day so I switched from the smiley face ones to the strip ones. I can't tell if this is positive. The edge of the line is the same color as the test strip but the rest is lighter. I have to email my doctor when I get the positive and this is stressing me out.

Does anyone have experience with the strips to know if this is positive?

Re: Ovulation Predictor

  • Thanks! Have you used this type before? I've always used the smiley face ones but since my dr wanted me to do it twice a day a figured I would try this kind. The fact that the edge of the line is darker had me confused. Is it generally a thick matching strip when it's +?

  • This is why you should not be timing an IUI based on OPKS.

Also, why are you doing IUI's, your intro says its your first month trying and your past post history does not indicate fertility issues.
Agreed!  Also OP, you need to get yourself onto a computer and delete your tickers, I'm pretty sure you're not 2+ years pregnant.

  • I've only ever used the ones with smiley faces, and I usually always received a smiley face. I'm not temping this cycle.  My doctor just told me to do the OPK twice a day, but I plan on temping next time and only using the smiley face ones.

I retook the OPK and it looks the same, but I also bought a smiley face one to try at the same time and it didn't give me a smiley face.

We decided to try IUI right from the start this time because I've had a series of serious health issues this year that led me to get 5 MRIs and 3 CT scans over the course of the year. Because of all of these tests, we met our out-of-pocket max for insurance, so the IUI would be 100% free for the next 3 months. It took us a while to conceive my first child. My husband's sperm was tested. His count is low, motility is slow, and the sperm morphology is not great.  We were about to do an IUI the first time we were TTC when we got pregnant.

  • No, I'm not on clomid or any medication this cycle.  If it doesn't work this time, I'll go on clomid for the next cycle.  We met with the doctor on CD9, so it was too late to start any medication, but she said she would still recommend doing an IUI bc of my husband's semen analysis.

Yes, I did get pregnant naturally last time. We would not be starting IUI this soon if it weren't for the fact that we had met our out-of-pocket max already for the year and it is free for the next 3 months.  Given my husband's semen analysis and the fact that I had several health scares this year, if there is an opportunity for us to get pregnant faster this time then we will take it.

I wasn't posting to offend anyone or looking for judgment; I was just hoping that someone had experience with OPK like the one I took and could give me their opinion.

  • I'm not going to touch the IUI issue because I'm not qualified but when my OPKs get that close, I retest every few hours. It can happen so fast, that even when testing twice a day, you can miss it. I and a lot of women on here use Wondfos from Amazon because they are very cheap. If this isn't your cycle, you might want to try them. That and start temping for sure.

  • Yes, I'm seeing a RE.  She took bloodwork and I've had 2 ultrasounds. Monday was my last u/s and my doctor said that I had follicles and looked like I would be ovulating by the end of the week. Yesterday was the first time my OPK looked anywhere near the test line. It was still lighter, but I was confused because the edge of the line looked like the same color as the reference window even though the overall color was slightly lighter.
Are you seeing a RE? I can't imagine they wouldn't be giving you blood work, ultrasounds, and a trigger shot to time the IUI correctly. It sounds like you need a new doctor. Just because it's "free" doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it.
