Trouble TTC a Sibling

Clomid With or Without Mid-Cycle Sonos

Hello all!

I have a question for any of you that have done/are doing Clomid, if you could be so kind to share your experiences!

I'm AMA and started seeing an RE in July to TTC #2 (been trying since December of last year...charting/temping/OPK's/the works with no luck but a CP in March...lots of spotting post O and a short luteal phase indicated to me that there was an issue since I had never spotted that way before. I also got pg with DS very easily). RE ran all the tests and has basically DX'd me as having a luteal phase defect and ovulation dysfunction.

So, end of July I started Clomid 50mg on CD 3, (had the baseline sono on CD 3), had a sono on CD 13 and the follies weren't quite ready, came back for another sono on CD 15, got the trigger shot, had TI, started progesterone in the TWW and 11 days later there was an awesome BFP.

Obviously per my signature, I miscarried at 8 weeks last month. I just started my first post-miscarriage AF today. I called my RE and am going in for a baseline tomorrow (since CD 3 is Saturday). My question is, she is giving me the option to do just the baseline sono and Clomid/OPK's this month and forego the mid cycle sonos/trigger (we are REALLY trying to save some $ since my insurance doesn't cover fertility and she knows this) Between my medicated cycle and paying for all the pregnancy sonos (I had to pay about 50% out of pocket until I reach my deductible) - I was out over $2 in essentially less than 2 months. With Christmas and DS's bday coming up, I really need to save where I can - and we don't have a ton of savings to go and blow either, and we are not poor, but are not well off either. Not doing the trigger and two extra sonos will save me about $775.....obviously this will be better for us. But the nurse told me today they prefer that I do the sonos and the trigger because there is "too much room for error" in just doing OPK's.

So, long story short - my question is, what is really the bonus of doing the trigger? Just so we can time intercourse well? I mean, if we have sex EOD for the majority of the month, I would think that would cover our bases no problem. I want the absolute BEST shot at becoming pregnant of course so I will do the sonos and trigger if it gives me a better shot, but.....I just don't know. I should also add that on 50mg of Clomid, I did not overstimulate and my uterine lining was fine...I only had one mature follie on CD 15.

Any one have similar experiences with the "less expensive option" of just baseline, Clomid and OPK's?

Re: Clomid With or Without Mid-Cycle Sonos

  • I agree with the above.  Clomid can affect you differently each time you take it.  The main risk of skipping the mid-cycle ultrasound would be having many follicles that all get fertilized and then you could have higher order multiples.  I think if you want to skip anything, I'd skip the trigger.  Go in on CD 13 or 14 for an ultrasound and then use OPKs.
