Cloth Diapering

Constant Rashes at Daycare

So my just turned 2-year-olds started daycare about a month ago after I went back to work.  They've been in CD since birth with no recurrent rash issues (they've had rashes here and there that needed to be dealt with, but nothing serious or chronic).  After they were there about a week, they both got yeast rashes, which they had never had before.  I figured maybe it was because they weren't letting them air out like I do at home and the wetness from the wipes created harbor for the yeast.  I asked their teacher to make sure they were nice and dry, maybe blot their butts with a paper towel or something, before putting the diapers back on.  I have her apply Grandma El's at each change and only send stay-dry dipes..  I'm still having issues with rashiness.  No more yeast, but just general redness and some hot spots.  I've been having to use disposables and Butt Paste more often than not to combat this.

The only thing I can think of is that I send disposable wipes to daycare and we use cloth at home with water and a drop of baby soap.  I use these disposable wipes when we travel with disposable diapers with no issue, though, and they are unscented, sensitive skin, etc., etc.  I'm not sure daycare will be on board with using cloth wipes, too... though I guess I can ask.

Any other thoughts on how to deal with this?  I know I can just have them wear disposables at daycare, but that's 6-8 a day and I'd really rather not have to spend $$ on disposables on a regular basis on top of paying for daycare.  It may come to that, though, if I can't figure out another solution.  I can't wait until they move up to the 2-year-old room and start working on PTing!

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Re: Constant Rashes at Daycare

  • Are they changing frequently enough???

My kids both got red from disposable wipes - can you just get them to use cloth wipes with water and throw them in with the diaper bag?

  • E got rashes from disposable wipes at dc too.  Even though we use them at home.  Apparently they were using someone else's wipes on her.  Check about that.
Also, you said stay dry... what kind?  Could they be putting microfiber near babies' skin?

  • I also wonder how often they're changing, but if they're sending home 6-8 dirty per kid per day that sounds like enough.

  • They change them every 2-3 hours, closer to every 2.  I did ask and confirm that they are using only the wipes I send.

I usually send BG Freetimes or 4.0s or Simplexes with the stay-dry flap out.  They've always been on properly when they come home, so I don't think she's putting the microfiber next to skin.

I guess trying cloth wipes is the obvious next step...  So, if anyone sends cloth wipes to daycare, how do you do that logistically? Do you only send enough for each day, or a week's worth? ... and what do you put them in?

Whenever someone comes and posts and is like "my 2 year olds have been in cloth since birth" I'm all like "why haven't you been on the cd board then?" Apparently my brain thinks we are the only people who CD in the whole world.

I'm always confused when folks from my BMB don't know that TB has a CD board. Where do people learn how to CD without our board?!?!?
Yup. It always confuses me when the topic comes up on my BMB and there are so many CD users, but there is only 1 other who ever comes over here.

  • I haven't been back to my BMB in ages. Guess I just never felt a strong reason to be there. Once DS was here, I was spending most of my time on various individual subject boards.
  • I used to post more frequently back when I was building my stash and just starting out. I had to stop hanging out here though because you guys are bad influences and I would be diaper-poor! : )

  • They aren't wipes from Sam Club, right? They were just recalled for causing trouble.

  • We did huggies wipes with my kids. The pampers left their buttstock almost slimy and the cheaper brands were rough or didn't clean well. I also wonder if they are changing the diaper more regularly than they do for disposables. Just having the wet diapers sit on them for an extended period of time can cause a rash.
  • The same thing happens to my LO. I attribute it to them not drying LO off as well and not changing as frequently as I do at home. I add a baking soda to LO's bath water and use coconut oil at night, which helps.

  • My first thought is they aren't changing often enough. Especially likely if they are only used to using disposals.
  • A few days ago I read a report about some baby wipes being recal, they where supposto with some kind of bacteria. I don't remember the brand. Look for information about the, may be is the brand the you are using.
