Cloth Diapering

Newborn Stash Check/Question

Hi ladies!  I've been a lurker since March/April and have butted in on a couple of cooking threads here and there since I have no CDing knowledge.  I think I may have intro-ed a while ago but I can't remember.  We're expecting a little girl sometime in the next couple of weeks and expecting her to be 8-9 pounds at birth based on a growth scan at 36 weeks and various OBs poking and prodding and making guesses (we'll see...).

We'll be using disposables (yuck) for the first couple of weeks at DH's request. Since I unilaterally decided we were CDing, I figured 2 weeks in sposies would be a reasonable concession, even though the smell makes me want to hurl.  I'm finishing up putting together my NB stash and thought I had it, but now I've chickened out and need some experts to check it.

We're trying to do this as cheaply as possible for the NB stash because DH isn't convinced and because I'm taking an extra 4 weeks of maternity leave, so we're relying a lot on the more inexpensive brands (but ones that I have seen well-reviewed on this board).

We have:
24 Indian Prefolds from Nicki's - Infant size
10 covers - 2 Thirsties Size 1 (seconds), 3 Blueberry Mini Coveralls (seconds), 5 Assunta Tiny
3 Imagine Bamboo Newborn AIO
3 Kawaii P&N (2 new style, 1 old style)
2 Planet Wise Pail Liners
2 wetbags for the diaper bag (can't remember the kind - Assunta?)
Various CJ's butter samples from SuperStash (I got like, 4-5, thrown in my last order)

Sitting in my cart at Nicki's:
6 Nicki's snapless fitteds - Small
2 Snappis

I feel like there's probably something else I can add to my cart at Nicki's to get to the $50 free leggings deal, or maybe even the $75 free shipping, but what am I missing?  I'm totally on board with the "buy all the diapers" thing, but DH, not so much, even though he thinks they're totally adorable.  I thought about adding a couple more AIOs or maybe a couple more fitteds.

Thoughts?  Thanks in advance ladies.  I know you get a lot of these NB stash questions.

Re: Newborn Stash Check/Question

  • A handful of fleece liners just in case you have a baby who goes crazy with wetness?
    CD-safe detergent?
A few hemp or bamboo inserts/doublers in case you need to add absorbency?
    Cloth wipes?

  • @TJ1979 would tell you to try a Best Bottom with one of their inserts and I agree. They get teeny tiny and will fit earlier than other OS diapers. Hands down my favorite diaper bag diaper.

  • You could always throw in something one-size for later like a bum genius 4.0, other pocket/AIO, or one size cover. It looks like you have a good start to me.

@kjsmith9‌ the liners/inserts/doublers are a good idea. What's the difference between those other than what they are made of? It sounds like they all add absorbency - are they different in some other way?

@CLLDLL‌ ohh, hadn't thought about the BB. I've had my eye in them because there's a lot of love for them and they're super cute but I thought they were for later. Added to cart.

  • Liners are fleece, just make diapers not feel wet (no added absorbency).
I still don't feel like I know the real difference between an insert and a doubler - doesn't matter though.  I really like my hemp babies, and there's lots of love around here for joeybunz too.  Also have some good ones from the GMD website.

    Yay!

Liners aren't absorbent. The just pull the wetness away from baby's butt. Also great if you need to use a non-CD safe cream.

Inserts are full size absorbent parts meant to stuff in a pocket or prehaps lay in a cover if it's made out of natural fibers. Doublers are smaller than inserts but still absorbent. Something like hemp or bamboo is a great choice to make a daytime diaper last a little longer for naps or long car rides. Once baby is STTN they are often paired with a fitteds or prefolds to up absorbency.

  • Wow! It all makes sense now! Thank you! I definitely think I would have regretted not adding any of those. Thanks!
