Low lying placenta

Hi everyone,
At our 20 week ultrasound we found out that the placenta was low lying. My OB said that in 90% of cases it moves by 28 weeks and all is well, she didn't tell me what happens if it doesn't move. We had our follow up ultrasound today (28w2d) and the placenta it's still low. The tech said over 4cm from the cervix is considered safe and it was 2.7ish. Is anyone else experiencing this or has in the past? Just wondering what I might expect.

Re: Low lying placenta

  • I personally have no experience with this. Although, I'm pretty sure it may require a c-section if the placenta doesn't move far enough away from the cervix by a certain date. Have they mentioned a c-section to you at all?

  • I also have a low lying placenta and the worse case scenario would be to have a scheduled c-section. Clarify your concerns with your DR, as every case is different. :)
  • That's what I thought would be the case. I think she was waiting to see of it moved to bring anything up. I did some more research last night and read that it's still possible for it to move as the uterus does a lot of growing around 35 weeks I think. I don't want a c section but whatever is safest :) I guess we'll wait and see
  • I was told I would have to have a c-section if it didn't move. But this is the first I'm hearing about it needing to be 4cm away... mine was over the cervix and I was just told it needed to NOT be over the cervix to deliver naturally... I'll have to ask them about that at my next appointment on the 5th!

Ya, my dr is checking one more time at 32 weeks then we will start planning our c-section because mine is only .6cm away n, like u, my dr prefers it to b 4cm away n he doesn't expect it to move much more. It's a bummer to have a c-section as a FTM but like u said, whatever is best for baby...

    Good luck :-)
  • Thanks you too! I didn't hear from my Dr today so I'll call her tomorrow.
  • I have mild placenta previa. I go for another u/s at 32 weeks to check on it. My doctor tells me it's very unlikely it will effect delivery, that anything more than 2cm away is safe for vaginal delivery. My own research tells me that until it is 4cm away, there is still a much greater risk for hemorrhage w vb.
I was also told that bc of the pp, I *can* opt to have a c/s. Atm, I figure I'll wait and see. Placenta previa only very rarely (less than 1%, I think) persists until delivery.
    Good luck!!!
  • Thanks I finally did hear front my Dr, she said she believes it has moved enough to be safe so I'm happy to hear that! :)
  • I had my follow up today and was told it had to be at least 2cm away.  I guess every doctor is different.  Mine is currently .7, so I have an appointment on Dec. 4th at 32weeks and if it hasn't moved enough I'll have an appointment at 36 weeks.  FX I don't need a C-Section!!

  • I hope it moves for you!
