Moms of bottle haters please come in

Hi ladies.. I know this has been posted before but I am looking for some encouragement and tips.  I go back to work in less than 4 weeks and everything DH and I have tried fails miserably. DD did take a bottle when offered to her until like 3-4 weeks old then rejected all bottles.

Fast forward to now we have tried about 9 different bottle types.  He and I both try to feed her. I have left the house on numerous occasions and she still didn't eat. I was out for over 8 hrs and she didn't eat the entire time.  We have even tried cup feeding including a sippy cup, spoon feeding and even syringe feeding. Nothing seems to really work.

We try walking, sitting in different rooms, holding in different positions, sitting inside and outside the house.  We have tried Lansinoh Momma, Born Free, Medela, Breast Flow, Dr. Brown's, a Gerber cheapie bottle, Playtex Ventaire, Munchkin Latch and the nipple that comes with the Similac 2 oz ready made formula bottles. Seriously at a loss.

Do I need to go on a nursing strike for like 24 hrs where I pump and only offer bottles and nothing else? I am getting to that point. I want piece of mind when I go back to work that she will eat. I would hate for her to go 9 hrs without eating and then feed like a mad woman all evening and night.

TIA!!

  • I have no idea why my screen name is different. I am Summermomma2be and have been on this board since last year. So weird! Must look into this.

  • Both of my babies were bottle haters.  They eventually caught on, but not with us.  It took the DCP to get them to taking a bottle.  With DD, she has to be faced out, on her lap, and fed the bottle.  She keeps craning her neck to "nurse" if she doesn't do it that way.  I promise that the baby will eventually eat and get the hang of it.  Nothing is as good as the real thing.  I would suggest letting the DCP do a few trial runs with her so that she can get acclimated to a different environment.

  • thx! it may just be the case.  DH is staying home with her until after New Years so she will start daycare the first full week of January.

  • I'm sorry you are going through this...I can't imagine how stressful it must be.

I second the trail runs with the daycare...to get you and her acclimated.  It is so much easier going back to work and not worrying about your little one.

Have you tried the new Medela Calma I really like it the milk will only flow if your baby works and creates vacuum to remove the milk. This enables the feeding behavior learned at the breast.  Or the go to favorite of many moms tommy tippi bottles

  • Does LO take a paci?  We leave our LO home with my mom and he wouldn't take a bottle well from her at all.  Mom read to try using a nipple type similar to the kind of paci they like, so we went out and got some MAM bottles, since he likes MAM pacis, and voila!  Now he drinks...still not awesome, but he won't starve now  :)

  • I wish she took a paci. Not even from the day she was born would she take a paci. Tommie Tippee may be the final bottle I try.

  • We finally found that the wide-neck Dr. Brown's bottles are the only bottles that DS will take.  He refuses the standard Dr. Brown's bottles.  If you think about it, the preference makes since.  I'm not a small chested momma-so I am guessing that the wide-neck makes the bottle more like the source.  We are planning to continue to use the level 1 nipple.

DD won't take a pacifier either and she drinks from the Tommy Tippee bottles.  That's the only one that she drinks from successfully.

  • We tried many bottles and did trial runs- pure torture. The first two days of daycare were rough but he's adjusted well most days. I spent so much time anguishing over which bottle would work when looking back it did no good. He didn't care what bottle it was he only cared that it wasn't the breast.

Same exact scenario with DD and mam. She only will take the mam paci and now only the mam bottles. I knew she was picky but I didn't know she flat out would refuse any other bottle. She will starve before she tries anything else. I don't know what I would do if we hadn't discovered mam
  • Yes and yes!!! My babe has been fighting the bottle - totally uninterested no matter which brand. My MIL has been watching her for the past 2 weeks and in the 8 hours I'm gone, she maybe got 2oz - ack! Then yesterday we gave her a faster flow nipple on a Tommee Tippe bottle - sucked the milk right down and looking for more, same today!! I hadn't switched to a faster flow nipple
Cause she acted like she was gagging on the other nipple.

So that was my savior finally - I kept
Getting pissed at all the people that said she'd get hungry enough and take it eventually but in the end - she did!
  • DD hated the bottle and ended up reverse cycling for 3 months until I ended up having supply problems (I got mastitis and my supply just never recovered and I had problems pumping) and had to switch to formula. It was so hard, and I'm not sure how I made it through those months on so little sleep.

DS also started out as a bottle hater. He ended up liking the Tommee Tippee bottles with a level 3 nipple. I think he needed the faster flow since I have an over active letdown that he's used to. He's also verrrrry picky about temperature - it must be to his liking or he will flat out refuse.
  • Hi. I'm from June 2014 but have a July baby. Have you tried really heating the milk? Our baby was the same way until he went to daycare. They double heat his bottle because he likes it so warm. Otherwise he'll refuse.

  • I was in the exact same situation and posted about our struggles multiple times. We had tried everything. As a last resort I decided to only offer the bottle. I went with the Dr Browns. It was a long and painful day but after about 10 hours she gave in when my husband got home and offered the bottle. I used warm breast milk each time I offered it to her. If she forcefully rejected the bottle 3 times, I'd give it a break and try again an hour later. After that first bottle she would only take it from my husband. It took a week or so until she would take one from me. During that week I exclusively pumped as to not confuse her. Now she will take a bottle from anyone and goes between bottle and breast easily.

Hang in there. There is hope!

  • L hates the bottle but will take it when starving. We use the Tommee Tippee bottles with the stage 2 nipple. I heat the milk a little warmer than my wrist also. Oh and I can't be in the room when he's fed or he will refuse the bottle.

  • DD just started taking bottles consistently for my DCP. Before she'd only take about 2 oz all day. She was fairly happy holding out, but it was making nights hell. I thought I had gone through every bottle option. However, it turns out she loves the Gerber first essentials bottles. For some reason I never thought to go the cheap route. You can gat a three pack for $2.
