Because I refuse to bump the previous Ebola thread...

Here's an interesting update to the Ebola scare at the Pentagon last week @lovethatdirtywater

https://www.arlnow.com/2014/10/20/acfd-vhc-refused-ebola-patient/

It seems that VHC, which previously stated to be ready to combat Ebola, refused to treat the woman and sent the ambulance away.  They didn't want to be seen as an Ebola hospital and lose business, allegedly.

Re: Because I refuse to bump the previous Ebola thread...

  • I somewhat agree.  Northern Virginia has two designated hospitals to handle people who present with Ebola symptoms at Dulles Airport. Since this wasn't an emergency situation, I can absolutely understand with the decision to send her away to one of the designated hospitals.

    The whole story seems shady.

From the hospital intitally broadcasting how prepared they were....to the patient in question stating she had been to Sierra Leone but then recanting that and saying no, she had not left the country (after sources close to her said she had not been out of the country).

    Something's fishy here.

I would say it was a drill or a test but the bus full of passengers were a ton of Marines and guests headed to the change over ceremony for the Commandant.  I doubt they would fuck with that for a test.
  • The hospital near me (the one who I would use in an ER situation) is one of the 2 designated hospitals. To be honest, I don't think that would stop me. They are designated, thus prepared and have procedures in place to not contaminate the ER. I would feel different if it weren't a designated hospital and had to randomly and suddenly (no warning) deal with an Ebola patient. So I get it.

I can absolutely see a health care system not wanting to become another Dallas Presbyterian, especially since there were other options available to this woman. But they shot themselves in the foot and actually ended up with bad press anyway.

  • I work for a hospital (not in the hospital campus) and we were holding a patient for observation for potential eboal last week. They eventaully confirmed that the patient did not have ebola, but ever since we have been getting daily ebola preparedness briefings via email. If we were to have a confirmed case I would not hesitate to go to my hospital in an emergency situation. I don't think the VHC situation was well handled but if they weren't prepared directing the patient to another hospital was the right call. If they were doing it to help their bottom line, well then they suck. I may delete some of this later to keep me from being google-able
