For those that took the 3 hour GTT... length in between tests?

So I know the dreaded GD test has been talked about a lot, but I was wondering if you ladies could help a sister out.

I failed my one hour test this morning (I fasted and had a 168... so not great at all). Last time I did the 3 hour but I can't remember how soon after I scheduled it. I am going out of town next Thursday (flying home to see family) and am pretty slammed between now and then and can't figure out when to work the 3 hour test in, unless I do it tomorrow morning. I'm hesitant to do it tomorrow because I've been pretty sick and just don't want to have to deal with that tomorrow. I'm also worried about failing the 3 hour (seems inevitable) and having to deal with learning how to manage all of this right before I fly out of town. However, I'm worried it's irresponsible somehow to wait until I get back. I put a message in to my OB about this, but he may not get back to me before tomorrow morning when I need to start the test.

Any thoughts? How long between the two tests did you wait? Were you advised to do it right away.

  • How long will you be out of town? It took them 2 days to get my results back that I failed the 1 hour- then I waited (based on when I could do the test and when they had an opening) for a week and a half. However, I did not fast and only failed by 3 points so I was pretty positive I was going to pass the 3 hour (and I did). Anyways............. I say all of that but in the end I think if it was me and I was pretty sure I was going to fail the 3 hour I would go in sooner rather than later.

  • They only insisted that I get my 3 hour done before my next appointment. I took it a week after my 1 hour because that's what fit my schedule

  • I had to do it before my next appointment so they'd have the results.

This was last pregnancy, and every clinic does it differently.

If the order is in for you to do the 3 hour, I'd just get it done as soon as possible.

  • They said I needed to come back within a week and a half of my original test for the GTT.

  • They didn't give me a time to do it by. Since I need my husband to take me and couldn't go before work (I'm a 'fainter' :-S ) and he has a crazy work schedule I'm going exactly two weeks after my 1 hr. (This is about a week and a half after my last appointment and a few days before my next appointment)
  • Thanks ladies, this helped a lot. I heard back from my OB and they prefer I go ahead and get it done, especially since I'm already close to 28 weeks. So tomorrow it will be. Hoping I get good results like you @papapalie, but I'm not holding my breath!

  • I failed my 1 hour in Friday and the soonest they said I could come in was this Friday. I am having to carb load for 3 days before and then fast before the test so that was what the length was about. Did anyone else have to carb/ sugar load before? Seems strange and so gross to me.
  • Good luck @edvent!
I only had to take the 3 hr GD test, and before my next appt (in 3.5 weeks). I waited forever, due to nervousness. Diabetes runs on both sides of my family. Luckily, I passed! I hope you do as well!
