Pregnant after a Loss

Thyroid antibodies-concerns

. My doctor is stressing the importance of going to a specialist for maternal fetal medicine due to the fact that I have thyroid antibodies/hashimotos. This means I have a higher risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, and other issues. She checked my levels last march after my second loss and they were at 27. I have been taking levothyroxine and they have gone down to 21, but normal is 1-9. She also tested my tsh and it's normal at .7. I'm terrified of losing this pregnancy based on the fact that everything I have read has stated that taking this medication "may" help but some studies are inconclusive and unsure if it helps at all. Has anyone had experience with this or been treated for this? Am I doomed if my antibody levels are still abnormal after taking medicine a for 9 months? I'm trying to make an appointment with the specialist and I feel like it's a race against time, as my other pregnancies ended or stopped growing at 6 weeks. I'm about 5 weeks now. Any advice or experience shared is appreciated. Thanks ladies.

Re: Thyroid antibodies-concerns

  • You asked a very similar question in TTCAL and were given great information.

You could/will always have antibodies if you have Hashimoto's they are not a problem if you are on medication. The antibody levels don't matter.

I'm on Levothyroxine and I'm 4wk 5 days, my RE is monitoring my TSH level and I'm continuing my medication, there's nothing else you can do.

You should see a specialist, no one here will tell you to go against your doctors orders!

Congrats on your pregnancy. I hope everything goes well.
  • Thanks @YorkieLove83‌ I didn't realize that the antibody levels don't matter, I haven't read that anywhere. Did your doctor increase your dose when you became pregnant?

Also I am almost 34 weeks and am hypothyroid/hashimotos. My TSH had been monitored regularly (about every 4 weeks) and I have also been seeing an mfm to be sure that my baby is growing appropriately and that there are no issues with the pregnancy related to my thyroid. It can be harder to manage a thyroid disorder while pregnant due to the hormone changes and weight gain but if you have a good endocrinologist and a good OB or mfm you should be well taken care of.

Stay off doctor google. There is nothing good there on these topics. Trust your ob and follow her instructions. Go get your levels checked ASAP and establish care with an endo. Ask the ob for a referral to an mfm. Also, keep in mind this little gem from my RE - people have babies every day with tsh and hashimotos dx worse than yours.

Yes there is some correlation between thyroid disfunction and trouble with pregnancy but having those things monitored and treated appropriately is key.

    Good luck!

  • I also have thyroid antibodies and I'm 38.5 weeks along with years of recurrent loss before this. This pregnancy I have had my levels monitored every 4 weeks or so and the high risk doctor also has had me have weekly NSTs since 37 weeks. I take levothyroxine as well. I started with doubling up the medication twice a week but my levels have been fine with just taking one a day. My TSH has never been high this pregnancy though and has stayed around 1.
