Have any of you ever experienced this?

I know this is going to sound crazy, but today while I was at lunch I was telling a story and in the middle of it, I forgot what I was saying, got very dizzy, the room went dark and I couldn't form words. My DH was very concerned and said I looked like death afterwards. He immediately got the check, took me home and asked me to sleep.
I did sleep. I slept for 3 hours nonstop. When I woke up I still felt dizzy and weak.
I have a sister that works in a hospital and she thinks I passed out without blacking out.
It was actually very scary. I didn't call the doctor simply because I didn't think it was something they could help and if it got worse I would go to the ER.
I have googled it and can't seem to find anything to do with it!

Any of you ever experienced something's so weird?

Re: Have any of you ever experienced this?

  • I did on sunday except I did the full out fainting. My doctor told me when I feel faint (start seeing black spots and heavy breathing) to lay down or to crouch with my head between my knees. She also suggested more salt in my diet. You should give your doctor a call anyways to get checked out. That's what they are there for.

  • Sounds like exactly what you said, you passed out without actually blacking out. It's happened to me before, including once very early in this pregnancy. It happens when your blood pressure suddenly drops. I would call your doctor though just to be on the safe side.

  • That's similar to what happened to me in church while we were standing up and singing. I was wearing a thick scarf and thick sweater. I think I overheated. I wasn't able to catch my breath to sing and everything started going white. My mom saw that I was DRENCHED in sweat which never happens. So I sat down and took as many layers off as possible. Just try keeping snacks and a cold water with you that helps me avoid the fainting spells.
  • I would definitely mentioned it to my doctor. I had this happened to me in college during an oral presentation, I passed out cold in front of my class. Now, I know what the signs are, and I sit right away, head between the knees to prevent it.

  • My experience hasn't been as serious as yours however, 2nd Tri is when I get headaches and dizzies. I solved the dizzies by upping my salt and drinking a Gatorade early in the day. -like 10am. I dilute mine with water.

    Definitely talk to your doc!
  • I don't know - that doesn't sound like passing out to me. I have LOTS of experience passing out, and when you're going, you know. Most of the time I don't actually lose consciousness, but if everything goes black, i'm hitting the floor. It might be just that for you, but just in case I would definitely talk to your doctor. Those passing out experiences do make me very, very tired, so the sleeping sounds pretty typical.
  • I've had this happen several times since my early teens. More often than not I don't actually faint but my vision gets dark, I can't hear properly anymore (ringing in my ears and it feels like there's fluid or something between me and other people), and I feel dizzy. I'm still aware of what's going on around me but I can't talk. For me it's usually a blood pressure issue and gets worse when I'm sick. Hasn't happened fully this pregnancy but I have been getting lightheaded a lot. Definitely worth speaking to your doctor.

    Anniversary

  • I have due to low blood pressure and orthostatic hypotension (blood everywhere but going to your head) due to standing up too fast. More fluids more salt and frequent meals. Also flexing/tightening the muscles in your legs helps send blood back upwards.

  • This happened to me at least twice when I was pregnant with DS. It is really scary!
If you are concerned, speak to your OB

  • Not to scare you but my first thought was a small stroke. I strongly recommend going to the Er and getting checked out.
  • It happened to me last week on a crowded train. I have a history of fainting, so I could tell that it was coming. This was only the second time I didn't completely lose consciousness - every other time I have completely blacked out. Luckily there were some very nice women around me on the train who gave me water and helped me until I was able to get back on my feet (nothing like sitting down on a disgusting train car floor). I always get sort of a hangover after these episodes, so your sleeping sounds about right.

You should definitely mention it to your doctor, but from all the reading I've done fainting is not unusual for 2nd tri.

All of that being said, I re-read your post and wanted to mention that I don't forget what I'm saying or stop talking - I'm able to speak until I lose consciousness. It's not always easy, but I don't get confused or anything. That's the part of your story that worries me.

  • Definitely call your doctor about this.

I personally have never experienced this but my dad's blood sugar dropped while at Costco and my mom said that he suddenly got very pale and sweaty and slurred until the words he was speaking nonsense. He didn't pass out, but he doesn't remember it happening.

  • I had episodes of blacking out like that when I was having blood sugar issues. I would definitely take to your doctor about this.
  • I've had the almost fainting bit (dizzy, spotty vision) and needing to sit down, but difference sounds like I know why; happens if PT gets too aggressive with broken arm rehab - blood flow related.

Make sure you talk to your doc.
