Cloth Diapering

Hello! and Questions

Hello all,
I'm an FTM due in January with a baby girl. My husband and I decided to do cloth diapering - I used some of the resources in the FAQ and lurked a bit to educate myself and help convince him, so thanks for that! I hope to join the board and learn more from you ladies and eventually become an expert myself :-).

We decided to do a diaper service for the first 10 weeks to help ease into life with a baby. The 10 week package ends in a wash-at-home trial so we can try several styles and brands before committing. The diaper service supplies the diapers, cloth wipes, inserts, covers, diaper pail, bag, and of course the washing.

So, a few questions to help get me started:
- What else will I need while we're using the diaper service? I'm thinking bum cream, possible wipe solution, and some wet bags for going out. Anything else?
- On wipe solution, is just using water okay? What are the benefits of using some kind of solution? Also, I've seen on a few posts that some people use boiled/distilled water - why?
- The diaper service has three packages: all pre-folds, all fitted, and a mix of both. I'm thinking it's a good idea to do a mix of both so I can get used to prefolds but still have the benefits of fitted for night - although not sure she'll be sleeping long enough hours in the first 10 weeks that it would be worth it. Thoughts?

Thanks all!

Re: Hello! and Questions

  • You will warn a cd safe diaper cream, there are tons of them. I would say get waxalene and at least one other like cj's. You will want two wet bags in case you have to go out while one is washing or already used. I would say get the mix of diapers, you never know what you will like, especially in the middle of the night. For wipe solution, I just keep a spray bottle of water and either spay the bum diretly or the wipe, depending on the diaper.

  • Congrats and welcome.
    - What else will I need while we're using the diaper service? A wet bag for out and about.  Butt cream.  Some suggestions are coconut oil, CJs, Grandma Els.
    - On wipe solution, is just using water okay? What are the benefits of using some kind of solution? Also, I've seen on a few posts that some people use boiled/distilled water - why? Most people use water.  I personally use LuSa baby wipe juice.  I dilute it in water according to the directions on the bottle.  I use distilled water b/c I have really hard water and I just want to.

Thoughts?  For NB stage I did a combo of prefolds and fitteds.  I used the prefolds during the day.  And fitteds for at night when I was deliriously tired and didn't want to have to fold the prefolds.  And my LO would sleep for long stretches at night even in the beginning.

  • Thanks! I've heard good things about CJ's on this board. Hard water - that makes sense. I also didn't think about how fitteds may be easier on me... that's really helpful, thanks.
  • I think they covered it.

  • Thanks all. I'm not sure about the snappi - I'll check and if not just get a few for myself. Do you need anything special to use a wipe warmer? I kinda like the idea since it gets really cold here.
