Daycare birthday treats

We're still a little over a month out from DD's birthday but I had a question about the birthday snack and kids with allergies. There is one little boy in her room that seems to be allergic to "everything", including dairy, soy, eggs, nuts and coconut. Poor kid. For DD's bday, do I not worry about it because his parents will provide an alternative or do I try to find something he might be able to have? And, either way, any suggestions on what to bring?

Re: Daycare birthday treats

  • If I had the kid that was allergic to everything, I would definitely provide their treat.  I'm guessing I would be too concerned about another parent not knowing what to look for in the ingredients and whatnot.  We aren't allowed to bring food into our daycare center, so I haven't had to ponder this... But I'm guessing something that your daycare provider won't spend 2 hours cleaning up would be good (i.e., cupcakes with tons of frosting could become crazy really fast).  What about something simple like cookies, rice krispie treats, fruit salad or fruit pizza?

  • I would guess that the parents of the kid with the allergy probably doesn't let him have any food at daycare that they don't bring in. But, you could always check out whole foods for some allergy free treats if you wanted to include him. They have some prepackaged stuff that could work.

At our daycare you cannot bring in anything homemade because they need to be able to read the ingredients so we'll bring either store bought cupcakes or cookies. I would ask the teacher about the child with allergies. I'm sure this has come up before and if it hasn't the teacher can ask the parents. It must really suck to have so many allergies so I would probably try to buy something for the child if the parents were okay with it and made a specific suggestion.

We use an in home daycare and there is one little boy there with allergies.  Our sitter keeps a supply of goodies for him so when someone brings something in he is included.  Last year we brought leftover cupcakes and cookies from Morgan's party.  This year for Halloween we are making banana ghosts and pumpkins from cuties.

For her birthday we will probably make cupcakes again, that seemed to go over well.  If we knew what the allergy was for the boy we would try to accommodate it, I suppose we could ask.  It's a small daycare so maybe I will...see what happens when I think and type :)

  • We don't do anything special at daycare; is a small, in home (4 to 6 kids ranging in age from 3 months to 3ish years) so there'd be a wide variety of needs to meet & would rather put the effort into making it special at home with us.

  • If it were me I think I'd try to bring a prepackaged goodie for him if you can find one. :-)
