TTM about teeth whitening

Anyone had it done professionally? Do you do maintenance on it?

Tl Dr story: I have to have crowns put on my 3 front teeth. They will match the existing teeth and can never be changed. So if I want to whiten my teeth I have to do it now. Under other circumstances I wouldn't have whitening done- like its something thats a nice thought but couldn't justify the cost. Dh thinks its silly esp since it requires maintenance- I will have to bleach them at home occasionally to keep them matching- but if its something i want he thinks I should do it since this is what my teeth will look like for the rest of my life. I'm trying to decide.

Re: TTM about teeth whitening

  • I did it about 8 years ago before I got a bridge put in for the same reasons- the bridge colour would be permanent and I wouldn't be able to whiten my other teeth later (the bridge is porcelain and is my four front bottom teeth- very visible). It was the zoom procedure. I had it done in one procedure in office, rather than the at-home overnight thing. It worked well although my teeth were a bit sensitive after for a little while. I got fitted with a tray and sent home with some gel to do maintenance. I bought a second thing of gel, but after that gave up on the maintenance. I have looked into getting the overnight kit to brighten them up again but they haven't gotten too bad. Like to anyone else you can't see that my bottom teeth might be slightly whiter than the rest. It was expensive and couldn't really afford it at the time but I'm glad I did it because I'm not stuck with yellowed teeth now.

  • I got the trays when I was in college...so around 12-13 years ago and I continue to do maintenance about annually or semi annually.

Dentists will agree that the laser treatments aren't practical because you will have to maintain them over the years, so you'll just have to do it again and again, but in your case, you won't have to do them again....so it might be smart.
  • This is all really helpful.  It costs $400 for the zoom procedure, and they would also give me the trays so that I could do maintenance at home whenever I feel it needs touched up.  I am leaning towards getting it done.
  • I wouldn't do Zoom, I would do take-home custom trays and bleach. Ask if you can go to the lab making the crowns so they can do a custom shade, regardless of if you bleach or not. You'll bleach for 10-14 days, wait a week and have them match that color. The life of a crown is typically 10-12 years, so just know you are not stuck with them for the rest of your life.
  • I did Zoom, through a groupon that cost around $150.  My teeth hurt like a BITCH for around 12 hours after.  If you go that route, take something before and after.
