Breast Pumps -- Please help!

Hi!

So, my husband and I are going to finish up our registry later this week and I wanted to put all of the accessories needed for a breast pump on the registry. I found out what pumps my insurance provider offers, but there are so many that I do not even know where to begin with research. This is our first baby, so I really am lost when it comes to breast pumps! Does anyone have any insight on which pump to go with, which pump they prefer, any pros or cons to the pumps, which accessories to register for, or any additional helpful information that you have found out along the way! I would really appreciate the help! I listed the pumps offered by my insurance below:

Re: Breast Pumps -- Please help!

  • I own the medela freestyle and loved it. I would recommend the Medela, just based off the name. I'm not too familiar with the model compared to mine.

  • I'm getting the most basic model of Medela from my insurance company and had no idea which accessories I'll need and which would just be a waste of time. I posted my question on the breastfeeding forum and got input from a couple people, you might find more BF-specific info there.
  • You do not have to be so rude. I thought these forums were supposed to be helpful and everyone was here to help each other out and we were all on the same team. I am just looking for people's opinions. If you do not have something nice to say, then why even answer? I understand I can go on amazon and read reviews, but I wanted to ask people on the bump to see if they have better information and more help. Moreover, I added as much information as possible so that I wasn't being vague and maybe could be more helpful when people were looking to help they had more to go off of. I listed all the pumps for other moms looking for help as well. This way if I just listed one, and they didn't receive that one, maybe they could get some information as well. I thought this thread could be more useful for everyone.
  • I found Lucie's List to be a good resource for all registry/baby gear questions: https://www.lucieslist.com/baby-registry-basics/feeding/#breastpumps

The Medela Pump In Style is what many of my friends who work use.

  • I used the Medela Pump in style for 8 months and I loved it. At one point my milk supply dropped tremendously and I freaked out and called Medela and they ended up overnighting me a brand new pump entirely just in case that was the problem(it ended up not being the problem).  I had no proof of purchase because I went through my insurance and Medela customer service was amazing. I will be ordering another Medela PISA. I am eligible for a new once since it has been over a year since I last purchased.

  • We don't mind helping a momma out, but you have to give to get is what the ladies are saying.

Anyway...I have the Medela PISA and loved it! I went back to work when DS was 13 weeks and pumped 3x a day for him and it held up and was great for me.  Some other things you will need is breast milk storage bags/containers, extra pumping bottles, the correct fitting flanges, extra pump parts and maybe a no-hands pumping bra.  You can look up stuff on line how to make your own with that though.

    Good luck!
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • I personally went with the Hygeia pump that my insurance is paying for as well. It has great reviews and is a hospital grade pump. It's the only breast pump endorsed by La Leche League. My sister in law in a midwife and mom and has used the Hygeia for her little one and that's what she recommended for me. She was telling me that it is a closed system pump and the breast milk never actually goes into the machine or motor like it can with others, so it never has the chance to get moldy. It looks like others have had success with the Medela as well so I think it's just a personal choice. :-)

Here's a blog post I found for a review on the Hygeia.

    Good luck!

  • I have the Medela Double Electric, Ameda Pureply Yours, and a Medela manual pump from DS.  I liked them all pretty equally and was glad I had all three for various reasons.  Too much to go into.

However this time I'm thinking I'll get either the Hygeia or the Freemie.  I've heard great things about the hygeia and it's a closed system so I can lend it to someone or give it away after I'm done with it.  And the Freemie because I've heard it's great if you want to keep working/doing things while you pump.  I have a hands free bra that works great for that with the Medela but not having a giant bag attached to my side while I'm doing it would be nice.
