Question about reduced work hours?! Please help!

I currently work in a salaried position where I am expected to work 50 hours plus a week. After some issues with bleeding, my doctor has given me restrictions to only work 8 hr days, or 40 hrs a week. I work in a high stress environment and am on my feet all day. Currently I'm only 25 weeks do I still have a ways to go. I am concerned about my pay being cut along with the reduction in hours and obviously this is not the best time for that either. In talking to my boss about it he was unsure of any consequences.

Anyone dealt with this before? Please help?

  • Are you in a contract position where it is in writing stating you will work 50/week and will be paid so much for it or is it a position that they say can take 50hr in a week to do your job so we will pay you based on that? If it's the later I don't think you should have anything to worry about.

  • Someone in HR help me out, but, to my knowledge you can not be fired due to a medical condition and if your doctor has given these restrictions, your company must abide by these.
I would look up your local labor laws and consult with your employee manual and HR person.

    Good luck

  • I know it always sucks to take a pay cut, but in the long run (Worst case scenario), take it easier! The health of you & your baby is much more important than money or any job!
  • That said, I work 40 hours a week on my feet...and I'm struggling with that, so I can't even imagine the position you're in! Take care!
  • I'm just over 22 weeks and work as a flight attendant...Can see it being difficult to work before too long. Our dependability rules are pretty strict :(
  • Have an honest conversation with your boss. If you plan to go back to work after baby, adore him/her that this is only temporary. If you agree together that cutting back is doable, socialize the plan with your coworkers (and clients if you have a close enough relationship with them) and block your calendar accordingly. Once you have buy-in it will be up to you to stick to your guns. If you work through inch or stay late one day you need to come in late or leave early the next. I'm considering dialing back to 35 (from 40-50) when I come back and that's the advice I've received. :)
  • Your employer should read this article that was in the NY Times last week about a company that tried to fire a pregnant woman whose doctor didn't want her working overtime. They are required by law to make reasonable accommodations for you.

  • First off, you are salaried which means you get paid x amount of $ regardless of how many hours you work, be it 70 hours a week or 30 hours a week. If you have a doctors note stating 40 hours a week 8 hours a day then they must abide by this. Your pay will not be cut, 40 hours is still full time.
