I think it depends on when you will need daycare and what the waiting lists are like in your area? I'm taking 3 months off, and then DH is staying home for 3 months, so we won't need daycare until DC is 6 months old. Because of this, we won't look until closer to birth.
Well my original plan was to start looking right about now. But now I'm stuck in the hospital and don't know what my due date will be so I'll probably have to wait until after she is born. I did already check into a couple of daycares, but I really wanted to find an in-home daycare and I won't be able to interview anyone.
It really depends on where you are. I waited until 20 weeks to register, which was way too late for my area where waiting lists are 9-18 months long. Your local board may be a helpful resource as to when and where to start looking.
I called last Friday to set up an appt and tour and she said that the first opening would be in the summer. Perfect timing for me...hopefully. I think the earlier the better to scout out some places.
We have just started looking into it. We need it starting in Sept (I'm home for 3 months and then Dh is home for 3 months). The wait lists are around 9-12 months around here. Our plan is to find a day care and then during the summer we are going to begin looking for nannies in the hopes we can get one. I am really anxious about it though. I hope we can find something we like and is available. I'm scared we waited too long...
Totally depends on what you are looking for and where you live. If you want a nanny, or a small in-home care, I would start looking now. Start asking around. Most of the people I know who use an in-home care that they are crazy about found it by word-of-mouth; these people usually don't advertise in the paper or anything.
If you want a center, I would start calling around and get a feeling of what waiting lists are like. Tell the directors when you think you would be going back to work and see if they think you should get on a wait list. It is usually a low cost thing (for us it was $25 for DS; $50 with DD, but we had a voucher and it was waived).
With DD in 2005 I didn't even start looking until she was 6 weeks old and we got a spot in a good center. With DS, I had a deposit down when I was about 18 weeks pregnant, because it is one of the best centers in the area and I didn't want to chance it.
It depends on your area. We live in the city of atlanta and its crazy around here. We already got on 2 waitlist (one last week and the other when I was 9 weeks). Our first choice is run more like a school and we'll find out in May. The other has a 9-12 month waitlist. We're going to visit one more next week.
Re: When to start thinking about...
I don't know, but if you find a place you like that's not too eexpensive let me know!
