So when does it count?

I feel like an idiot for asking this, and it's likely a stupid question, but when does babbling count as talking? LO says "mama" and "dada" but it's not like she calls that put to us, so I was still just counting it as babbling. She also says "nyah nyah" and shakes her head when I tell her "no no". DH insists that doesn't count as words, but I'm not so sure.

I think it's just vocalizations at this stage, and not REAL talking but, whatever, I still say my LO talks! She clearly knows who is , and says, Mama, Dada, Nana, Papa, and what is a "Puppy." She even says her Dad's name (it's kind of creepy)..I don't think it's until like after 1 that it's "talking" but I could be wrong.

  • DD says "dada, douh (dog), doggie, nana (mama) and hey you". She calls DH dada all the time. She says dog and doggie while looking at or playing with the dog. And she calls me nana. She has said mama a couple times but is still having a hard time saying mmmm on purpose. She knows what she is saying so I count it.

  • G definetly knows who mama and dada are and looks at us when we ask where mama and dada are, but she's definetly not calling for us. The "no no" is her mimicking me, but she doesn't get it. Although she now looks at me and says "no no" right before she tries to pull drawers open so something is sinking in!
  • We have a lot of babbling over here, but no talking. She does day baba when waving though.

  • The only word my kid says is "more" when I'm not feeding him fast enough. I'll sign it and he angrily yells "MOAH" at me. Other than that it's all just babbles. When I say "say mama/dada/dog" he just grunts at me but will babble them at his own whim.
  • Our dog's name is Dudley, and he has definitely chased the dog saying "dud-ey" and I count that as his first word because he doesn't say "dud-ey" to anything or anyone other than the dog. He will say mamamamama and dadadadada to everyone and everything. But dud-ey is consistent for the dog, and only the dog.

  • G says dada when he wants DH and mama for me. Mamamamama seems to mean more.

I count anything that has clear meaning associated with it. Reid will be silently playing and look straight at DH when he walks in the room and says dada. He's done it multiple times, so I count it. Everything else is pure nonsense.

DS1 didn't have any words until over 1.

  • Simon had been saying dadadadada and mamamama (among other noises) for quite a while, but I didn't count it until about two weeks ago -- he was on the changing table and called out DADAAA to DH who was walking by the room.  It seemed like he actually recognized what he was saying, so that was enough for me to record it as his first word.

  • We get a lot of dadadadadaddadadadada. To everything.

We got a Hiiiii and a yaaaa for yes the other day. Of course, we just assume this is what he's saying since that's what the situation called for at the time and it sounded remotely right.
