Cloth Diapering

Newbie looking to start building a NB stash

Hi there! I've been lurking here for a while, as well as browsing endless CD websites. My first baby is due in May, and I'm beyond excited to put some fluff on his or her butt. My parents went with cloth for me and my sister back in the 80s.

I'm a nanny and I've been around a few cloth diapers in my day - mostly AIOs. For us, I want to go with a more economical option and after my research I think I want to go with prefolds and covers.

However I'm running into a LOT of conflicting information about what sizes are best for newborns. I will also admit I am clueless as to the difference between flats and prefolds. Some websites seem to use the terms interchangeably but on this board I've noticed people promoting one or the other.

Can anyone share some guidelines for me on building a stash of prefolds and covers? For a newborn and then beyond? I want to get started early to take advantage of sales and used diaper lots in my area.

Many thanks. :)

You should have 36 newborn changes, this allows you to do laundry every other day. For my new born stash I personally purchased 14 green mountain workhorses, 5 all in one bum genius NB, and 20 prefolds. For covers I have 4 blueberry mini coveralls, and 4 rumparoozs NB. A flat is one large piece of fabric. where a prefolds is already folded and sewn into that shape making it several layers thick.

Kissaluvs size 0 are another nice NB fitted. I like that they have an extra snap in the front to make room for the cord stump. They are a bit more expensive than workhorses, though, but I would keep an eye on Jillians drawers gently used page for deals.

The great thing about flats is you can use them at any stage. There are a few good folds for newborns and later on you can use them to stuff OS pockets. And they clean up very easily, since they are typically one layer of natural fiber.

I found prefolds easy to use during the NB stage and they also lasted a bit longer, as far as sizing went. But I really loved fitteds the first few weeks while getting used to everything.

    Just buy all the diapers!

  • Flats are a large square of material, one layer, usually about 27"x27". They can be folded many different ways to fit different sized babies, and to place the most absorbency in the right spot.

Prefolds are smaller rectangles of many layers. Usually there is 4 layers with a strip in the middle that is 8 layers.(written as 4x8x4) a prefold is essentially a flat that has been pre-folded for you, hence the name.
    These come in many sizes.

If you want to stick with entirely prefolds, I would get 36 in nb size, and about 8 covers. You could likely get away with fewer covers, that is generous.

After nb stage, with prefolds you have a few options. Because they are sized, and every brand has different sizes and number of sizes, it can get confusing. GMD are some of the most popular, and after nb they have small, medium, medium wide, large, and extra large. Some people skip small. Some people skip nb. Some people wear med until potty training. Depends on the size of your baby, and how much bulk bothers you.
After nb you want about 24 changes- so 24 prefolds and 4-6 covers.

  • We had a mix of osocozy size 1 prefolds, green mountain diaper newborn prefolds and workhorses, and some flats. Workhorses are awesome during the newborn stage. For covers we tried a bunch of different brands, and they all seemed to work about the same for us. I'd definitely recommend getting a variety to see what works for you.
  • Everyone here recommended I put together a mix of different styles and brands for newborn stash.

So I put a bunch on my registry.....

    Flats, prefolds, covers
    AIOs and pockets.

I am planning on about 12-18 AIOs and pockets combined, then having flats prefolds and covers for the rest.

I also have a few bigger diapers on my list, but will wait until I know what my LO will need since babies are different sizes and that can matter in whi ch diaper you use.
