Funny-shaped follicles?

Hello!

So this cycle I have what might be two follicles right on top of each other. On the u/s it looks like one big follicle but with little indents on each side in the middle, kind of like a follicle muffin-top, if that makes sense. I had three monitoring appointments this cycle and the follicle(s) got steadily bigger (while retaining the muffin top). They could never get individual measurements of the two follicles and there was always some question about whether there were really two follicles there. Then yesterday I had a new sonographer and she said she just thought it was a cyst. After monitoring the nurse called and scheduled me for trigger/IUI, so the bloodwork must have shown something that indicated a follicle.

Have any of you had this before? Two follicles on top of each other? Or one funny-shaped follicle? The follicles are fluid-filled, right? So it seems if it were just one follicle, it would be weird to have those indents on the sides. But it also seems weird to me that the follicles would stay SO CLOSE throughout the entire cycle. Also what does a cyst look like as opposed to a follicle? I'm trying to trust my doctor and go ahead with the IUI, but the sonographer has me worried that I don't actually have any follicles.

My husband was diagnosed with state IV colon cancer in 2009. Surgery and six rounds of chemo left him in remission (yay!) but with low testosterone. He took Androgel for two years starting in Jan 2011.
-SA in Jan 2013: big fat zero; stopped Androgel
-varicocelectomy in June 2013
-SA in Dec 2013: 23mil/ml, really low morph
-SA in March 2014: Count doubled! Morphology apparently no longer an issue.

Treatments:
April 2014: hysteroscopy
June 2014: TI (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel: 2 folliclces) = BFN
July 2014: IUI#1 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1 follicle, 23mil post-wash) = BFN
August 2014: IUI#2 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1 follicle, 43mil post-wash) = BFN
September 2014: IUI#3 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 2 follicles, 15mil post-wash) = BFN
October 2014: IUI#4 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel; 1-2 follicles, 12mil post-wash) = BFN
November 2014: IUI#5 (clomid/bravelle/ovidrel: 1 follicle, 23mil post-wash) = BFN
December 2014: IUI#6 (gonal-f/ovidrel): 2 follicles, 55mil post-wash) = ???

    Double bubble! That's a much more accurate description than muffin top! Okay, good to know, thanks for the reassurance. The sonographer was very pessimistic so it just got to me

    My estrogen was 301 which seemed a little low if there really are two mature follicles. I'm trying really hard to trust my doctors since they are the experts in all this, but that gets a little harder with each failed cycle.

    Last cycle, I had 2 follies similar to what Rumbera described. But it was easy for the sonographer to see the line between them. Hope your timing turns out to be just right!

    I had two follies like this as well during this cycle, with one "behind" the other, and looking almost like one bigger follie in some views.  There didn't appear to be any concerns.  Good luck to you!

    Thanks everyone! At the IUI my RE reassured me that it's not a cyst.  He said exactly what Rumbera28 said - that a cyst is a follicle that didn't ovulate, but this one only just developed this cycle. So unless it sticks around into next cycle, there's no reason to call it a cyst.

    The only thing that's still weird is that he said it was probably one follicle. When I asked him why he thought that (vs thinking it was two on top of each other) he didn't really explain. At this point it doesn't matter, except that I would have thought my bloodwork would indicate 1 vs 2 follicles. I'm a little worried I have two immature follicles but they think it's one mature one based on my estrogen levels. Nothing I can do about it now except wait out the TWW!
