Pump question from a newb

Hi! I am a FTM, currently 26w and planning on being a SAHM/working from home once LO is here. My hope is to EBF, do I need to buy a pump right away, or should I rent one? I have no idea how much I will need it, and I don't have insurance coverage to get one. Should I just bite the bullet and buy one, or should I rent first and see how much I will need it? What do you recommend?

That's a tough question. If you'll be at home and able to nurse most of the time, you probably won't need to have a high quality electric double pump. But it is nice to have at least a hand pump so you can have milk available if you're away from LO for more than a couple hours. If you have any supply issues early on you may need to use a hospital grade double-pump, which you would probably rent. So maybe buy a single hand pump to have just in-case, and then play it by ear?

Thanks for the advice! I have seen a lot of recommendations for the more expensive double electric style pumps, and I am just not sure how much I will need it? I dont really want to spend $300-400 for something I may not need, but I don't want to be unprepared either. I will start with a single hand pump and see how things go.

I would 100% get a double electric breast pump - you can get a good one for around $200. This at least allows you the freedom to have someone else give a bottle and for you to get a break. Also you should have a supply in the freezer incase you get sick and can't bf for a few days. Buy one now and wait to open it make sure bf works for you and then if not you can return it or maybe buy one used and sterilize it.
