BF and BLW

I need some guidance on BF and BLW.  I am new to this.  DD#1 I stopped BF within her 1st month.  DD#2 I stopped BF when she was 6 months old.  So for both of them I went to formula.  DD#3 is 9 months now and we are doing BLW.  She eats a ton of food and is not showing much interest in BF.  First I thought it was a supply issue.  I started taking fenugreek, blessed thistle, and drinking more water.  But that has not made a difference.  She would rather just lay on the Boppy and smile at me.  She even bit me last week.  Is this normal for a BLW baby?  Are we at the end of BF?  What about her not being a year?  Should I be giving her formula then?  Is it too early for milk?  I know I could probably Google a lot of this but I feel safer w/ answers from women I trust (aka you guys).

Re: BF and BLW

  • What @Chickypoo2468‌ said boob before solids. My LO is almost 9 months and I pump at work during the week for her and bf at night and on weekends. Some days she is just way too busy to want to stop to eat and won't finish a lot of her milk I pumped. Even today I have family visiting and she was way too busy to want to sit and breastfeed, so I let grandma give her some pumped milk.

  • Some times I offer boob first and sometimes not.  I will make sure to do that now.  How many times a day should I be BF to make sure she is getting enough?  And to make sure my supply doesn't dry up?  I am a little freaked out b/c I know that up until a year that breast milk should be her primary source of nutrition.  Based on the last couple of days I know that's probably not the case.
  • Hard to tell how many times, I would just keep offering. As they get older, they get way more efficient at nursing and don't need to nurse as long. Sometimes my LO has days where she just snacks and pushes me away...so like every hour. She usually gets a good nursing session in before her naps though.

  • Just chiming in to say that if she really isn't breast feeding much, you will want to make sure she's not getting dehydrated.
  • What if some days I can only get her to BF 3 times a day?
  • Ok so I think I got myself all worked up for no reason.  Looks like this was a phase (like MK said) she went through late last week.  Yesterday was slightly better.  And today she has nursed really well 3 times already.  Lets keep our fingers crossed this keeps up.  I was soo on the brink of giving up on Saturday!

As for the quiet dark room...I also have a 22 mo. old so that's not really possible all the time.
  • I totally get what your saying.  But my DH travels a lot for business so it's usually me alone.  And for my sanity the girls nap at the same time.  I was trying to put the older one down first and then nursing the baby, but that was after lunch and I have been trying to offer boob before every meal now.  Most of the time the only nursing session I get alone with her is if she wakes up first in the morning.   And she has always nursed good for that no matter what's going on around us.
