How many house dogs do you have? We have two older ones and my husband wants to get a puppy for the kids and for hunting.. Just curious how many most people have.
I'm with @FarmBoysWife, I'm not really a dog person. I feel like they are too dependent and it is too much like having another kid. I'm more of a cat person, however cats give me asthma attacks, so we won't be having any of those either :-P
dogs show so much unconditional love. there have been studies that show melatonin levels in dogs raise when they see their owners. dogs love their owners. they need their owners. how anyone can choose a cat over a dog baffles me. I'm not saying people shouldn't love cats, but not liking dogs??

Cat: feed, litter box a toy or two and you're golden. Keep me indoors and you'll probably never have fleas.
Dogs: fences, poop on the lawn, fleas, ticks (and all the diseases that come with those) they need to have running space or walking, some are large, if they get wet they get that smell. Here if your dog gets hit by a car you are liable for all damages. Rabies issues, they bark for all sorts of reasons.
Both animals love you just the same, cats are just moodier. Maybe I'm cruel and insensitive but the amount of time and attention a dog needs is to much for me. That doesn't mean I'm not trustworthy. My personality just isn't good with dogs.. You make it sound like I should get a dog just because they are good pets.
I'm not arguing a cat isn't easier to take care of. It is. I'm just saying that people that don't like dogs aren't my kind of people. I don't think both animals love you the same. Cats don't have the mental capacity. At least I haven't seen anything to show they do.

I like dogs. We always had (outdoor) farm dogs growing up.
I don't have time for a dog. We have a cat. I've had cats off and on since moving out of my parents' house.
My current cat will bite if he doesn't have food in his dish. He will snuggle (occasionally) when the kids aren't near. And he chews on my shoe laces and loves my wool coat.
@htn1763 One of my previous cats used to cuddle in bed with me, he got upset if I didn't cover him with my blanket. He sensed if I was sad or upset and would literally hug me (a paw on each side of my neck) and give me kisses. He showered with me every morning. But in his defense, I think he thought he was a dog.
1 dog...I would have another of my husband let me. Ours is a big lover he has had to adjust though to not gettin all the attention and that has been rough on him. He keeps us active though we have to walk him every day rain snow or sun he wants a wall and let's you know! I wouldn't change it I have had dogs my entire life and a crazy dog person. My dog has never had fleas!
I live in "the country" so we've got a 10 acre piece just off the highway. We have one lab, and we'll get another when he's older. I've heard that older dogs can help make a good influence on younger dogs.
Living in the country is nice, because he can just be on a line, not in a 10x4 kennel all day. Plus when I'm home he just gets to run free in the yard. But he's also mainly an outside dog, except for when my husband is out of town. Then he's an indoor alarm system.
Does everyone need a lab? Nope. But he's the best dog for us. He gets to go hunting & hiking & swimming in mountain steams & ponds with my husband, & comes home to snuggle with me. Also, he's an amputee so he gets cool points for that.
I also want all the puppies. Maybe I'll tell my husband I'll hold off on getting knocked up if we can get a little squeaky inside pup for Holland for Christmas!

Really? Whether someone would like a dog as a pet is make or break for you?
@lovethatdirtywater Sadly yes. My husband and I each had two before we got married. A fifth one found his way into our yard while we were engaged, and at that point adding one more didn't seem like a big deal. They are great dogs, but they're expensive and I spend an hour every day walking them. I blame my parents for not letting me have a dog when I was little...

I like dogs for the reasons you listed, but I much prefer cats. Cats can be cuddly, but they'll also leave you alone and go do their own things. Dogs are always right there, they move when you move, they have dog breathe, slobber, bark. I love to dog sit my SILs dog but I also love when he goes home. We'll get a dog someday, mh wants one and I do think every kid should have a dog to grow up with...but I'm trying to put that off as long as possible.

You've got to be crazy!! I couldn't imagine having 5 dogs while I was growing up on our 100 acre farm. The most we had was 3 at any one time. They look like they are happy though. :-bd

Little jealous? Our cat was fine when it was just DS1. Now that LO is here, they all fight to take a turn sitting on my lap. I woke up this morning to the cat asleep on my chest.
@katykatykaty you have reassured me that adding another one to our mix wouldn't be to bad.. I don't want to look like a crazy dog person haha.. Our two that we have are well taken care of and adjusted soooo well to our two boys. They are older tho and won't be around forever so it'll be nice to get a pup and the boys can grow with it.
We have two. A pitbull boxer mix and a shitzhu pug mix, plus two cats. Our house is full! The pit is an awesome dog, listens great, huge lover, but has little interest in DD. The shitzhu is a hand full! We can not get her house trained (it's been three years and is much much better than it used to be) but I swear it's like watching over a toddler bc I can't let her out of my sight or who knows what she's done of gotten into. She's wonderful with DD though.
They've adjusted well with DD around, especially since we go on lots of walks with them to get their energy out.
Kinley Diane Born 2/4/14 Weighing 6 lbs 10 oz and 20 inches long
We have 2. They are pretty easy. Our mastiff is super gentle and sweet with the little girls, and our papillon mostly stays out if the way unless he's looking for some love. My only complaint is how sloppy the mastiff is. She definitely adds time to my cleaning routine. But she makes up for it by being so sweet. Plus neither needs much excercise. The pap is a lazy lap dog, and the mastiff is so lazy, she's like a big hairy piece of furniture.
@talee1989 The worst part is the shedding, but you're probably already used to that with 2. We've figured out how to walk 3 at a time, so hopefully that would be doable for y'all too.

Shedding, ahhh yes!!! Fortunately we have hardwood floors on the main level where we pretty much live except for our bedrooms.. I can't imagine how much hair is in the carpet even with vacuuming!
The two we have now are a Rottweiler and rat terrier/chihuahua cross and I've lrarned to walk them plus push the double stroller with the boys but I'm not sure I would attempt 3 without DH.
We have a dog, Smitty (hence, SmittyPants) and I love him dearly but I'm having tremendous guilt about him. He is not getting the amount of attention he needs. It's a lame excuse, but I'm just so tired by the time the kids go down for the night that I don't have it in me to play with him like he wants. He gets a daily walk with DH in the evenings but that's about it. To be honest, if I could do it again, I would wait to get a dog until the kids are in grade school.
We have 2, a Shih Tzu and a Pekingese mix. The shih Tzu came from a breeder and he was our first baby. Then we adopted the Pekingese 2 years ago. We love them dearly, but they are definitely a handful. Although, I wouldn't trade them for the world. We just need to get out of this small apartment and into a house of our own with them. The Pekingese is tiny and can't go upstairs, and of course we live on the 2nd floor. So we have to carry her up and down all the time. Plus she has dry eye so that is constant eye meds, artificial tears, wipes and antiseptic, skin condition too, so we have powder enzymes for that. Regardless of her high maintenance status, we gave her a life 100% better than the one she had. They said she was a stray, but we think she was in a puppy mill at one point, plus we doubt she could have survived alone out there! Plus they have hair, not fur, which means no shedding, but they need to be groomed about every 8 wks. Which is expensive!! I am definitely a dog person. I was raised with them and I will always have one.
I did have a cat once, and he was just mine and I loved him just as much as my dogs, but I can't ever have another since MH is allergic
We have 1. She's a rescued mutt, and she was our first baby. We lucked out and got a wonderful pet! She's super chill, doesn't require much exercise, doesn't shed much or slobber and crate trained easily. I'm a dog person and would happily have 5 dogs if I had the time and money. I would even like to get into a reading dog program eventually, where you take a specially trained dog into the classroom to help children with reading issues or other learning disabilities. @katykatykaty I love that picture! Your dogs look so content. You must be a vampire though... Where's your reflection!?

We have two... a male boxer and a female mixed breed. They are awesome and I cannot imagine not having pets. I love cats they are beautiful; but I do not like catboxes so..
I almost adopted one this weekend.. I didn't but the threat was real. Dh wasn't with me and the dog was female, he has said no more female dogs... if I find a male I cannot promise he will not be coming home (this was a bulldog boxer mix, 3 yrs old just a perfect fit for us)
