I hate food

I am 8 weeks and since about week 5 I absolutely hate food. I have heard people talk about food aversions but this is not specific foods. Eating is my least favorite part of the day. I do feel hungry and if I don't eat then my nausea gets worse but the thought of any food at all makes me feel ill. I force down whatever I can - often bread or mashed potatoes- but then I feel guilty for not eating the right kind of foods for the baby. I am normally a very clean healthy eater but just can't stomach anything I would normally eat. Please help. Has anyone experienced this and found a way to overcome it?

Re: I hate food

  • I am absolutely the same way. If I could just never eat again that would be great. I have noticed that my heartburn and the taste in my mouth play a huge part in my total hatred for food. Find the food that upsets you the least with variety. I limit this to 1 meal a day but sweet foods dont upset my stomach or leave my throat in pain. So weve been making waffles, greek yogurt strawberry banana smoothies, and snacking on jello/puddding. I know too much sugar is bad but atm its better than starving. Def keep the high sugar to a minimum but it keeps me sane that I can eat something without wanting to cry at the end. GL

  • I've felt sick any time I eat... I've been trying to stick to mashed potatoes and chicken noodle soup but even those don't work most times.  I also try to drink V8 fusion (has fruits and veggies) to get some extra nutrition.  It should go away in a few weeks hopefully and baby will be just fine... just gotta make it to the nausea free weeks :)

  • I was definitely the same way from weeks 6-8. Just now it's starting to go away and I'm enjoying eating a bit more. When I felt like that I was eating a lot of jello and crackers!

  • So agree! I've been hating on all foods and choking down things!
  • During my last pregnancy, I developed aversions to anything with a strong smell and any food with sauce or mixed together. I found it was much easier to eat simple, cold food that wasn't mixed together. So I could eat some leftover chicken cold, but I couldn't eat the hot roast chicken.

Try very small portions and eat things separately: a slice of cheese, some meat, some fruit or veggies, a few crackers. I also found I could eat hard boiled eggs which was a great protein when it was difficult to eat meat. I hope this helps!

  • 8 weeks now and for the past 2 I've been this way. I'll think I want something and then once I get it, I can't even stand the smell. It's crappy. I'm eating so poorly.

  • Same here, i can remain hungry all day if this nausea doesn't strike again .. But even I feel nausea , I eat some oranges and water melon and my tummy feels full. I sometimes feel so bad that I can't even eat properly for my baby :(
  • I am 8 weeks and it's been the same for me since week 6. I can't wait until I can eat healthy again. I can basically only eat carbs now. I am drinking the v8 fusion as well.
  • I'm having a hard time stomaching anything but cantaloupe. Ugh!
  • Me too! Sometimes I get cravings, make the food I wanted, and then gag while trying to eat it. So far, my go-tos are plain carbs, cold fruit, and smoothies. FX the prenatal takes care of the rest, haha!

  • Yep. Yep yep yep. The only food that I can eat without feeling barfy is junk food.

I can scarf down a big mac and fries no problem but real food makes me feel like poop.
  • Same here! I try to eat something bland (yogurt, 1/2 bagel, etc) in the AM, then I snack every two hours on something that has NO SMELL. The smell is key for me; I smell things that I normally love (like spaghetti or chili) and feel like I'm going to puke. Rice cakes are awesome, almonds, granola bars...at this point I'm just forcing down whatever tiny portion will stay down. Good luck!
  • This is how I am feeling this time around. I'm trying to stay hydrated and east the few times something actually sounds good (even if it's only for a few bites).

  • Thank you ladies. I'm happy I'm not alone. I am trying V8 too and adding some protein powder to the smoothies I can stomach. Hopefully we will all feel hungry and want healthy foods soon!
  • I'm constantly starving but HATE EVERYTHING!!!!! I am a super clean eater but even that stuff repulses me. I make dinner and don't even want to eat it NOTHING sounds good. I'm very underweight so I know I have to eat to keep the baby!
  • I hate food as of this week.. Nothing sounds good. I don't want to eat, but I obviously have to.  I have to concentrate while I eat to prevent myself from throwing up.  I actually told DH today while we were eating lunch that eating is stressful for me right now.

I know I have to eat to take care of myself, to keep the nausea at bay and I feel so much better once I eat.  The thought of any and all food even water is so unappetizing.  It all makes me want to throw up.

Ugh. Week 6 and food is my enemy. I haven't even had m/s, but I do get waves of nausea. NOTHING sounds good to eat. By dinner time I can usually think of something random that sounds appetizing. Ex. The other night I made DH go out and get me ginger ale, grapefruit, sweet potatoes and choc chip mint ice cream. A couple nights ago I wanted meatballs, and then couldn't think of them the next day without feeling sick.
I'm a Big eater and usually love food so this is very bizarre for me.
Glad I'm not the only one. I thought I was supposed be starving like I was weeks 3-5.
  • My doctor advised that it is perfectly normal for healthy habits to go a bit haywire during the 1st trimester due to food aversions and fatigue. I just keep hoping that after week 12 I'll be able to get back into a normal routine!

  • oh, me too.... and I'm ALREADY getting constipated, which isn't helping.   I miss my hunger from weeks 3-5.  I was so hoping this pregnancy would be MS free....

  • Nothing is appetizing to me now, starting at 7 weeks. Even my favorite restaurants make me want to vomit! Going on a major fruit shopping trip tonight, hopefully I can choke some of that down!
  • I feel like you wrote this post for me. I am so miserable. I'm 8w 3d. Since week 6, I can't keep anything down. I hate food. I hate the smell, the look, the thought. Ugh! I resigned from my company (bc I don't have to work) and thank GOD I did. Because I don't know how mommies actually go to work like this. I praise you all!
I snack on crackers, but gagging. I hate them but it sort of help. Grilled cheese is ok, I eat it because the bread helps, I drink tea with milk because it's the only drink I can take down. I cry once a day, if not more. I'm taking Zofran 4mg, but it works when it wants to. Doc won't change the med and just told me to deal because it will eventually go away. I'm so sad because I eat so bad for my baby, and I can't even seem to get full. Heartburn is taking over my life too. So far this pregnancy has been super tough. There's a little dinosaur (as I call it) growing in my belly and I wish I could care for him/her better. :..( wish this would just go away so I can go back to normal.

    Thanks for listening. :/
  • I hope you feel better too. I will pray for all of you mommies dealing with this too!!
  • Yeah. I haven't had any vomiting and nausea is usually around late afternoon, but I'm like completely disinterested in food. I also get dizzy. I have cravings here and there, but I'm not starving this week. Last week, I felt like I couldn't find enough food. Now, I've got random snacks throughout the day and have to force lunch, but still have a pretty full lunch bag at the end of the day. I know baby needs more, but I'm just kinda like "meh" [-(
  • Absolutely! Nothing tastes good and I even dread the thought of eating...I just want everything to taste the way it is supposed too :((

  • I'm the same way. I've found that organic unsweetened applesauce helps a lot!
