Light in baby's room

How bright/dark are you keeping your LO's room at night? My DH insists on keeping a light on during the night so DS does not wake up in the dark scared (he's only 7 weeks) I think it's too bright in there and it's keeping him from sleeping longer. We wakes every 2-3 hours at night (hungry of course). I bought a night lite but it's not enought lite for DH to be happy with. Just curious what you all are doing.

  • I've got one of those salt crystal lights in my room. It's on a dimmer and does warm soft light so it's pretty dark and I can still see what I'm doing.

  • Babies don't become afraid of the dark until after 9 months usually. It's more likely that when they are more aware of their surroundings they realize they can't see. I think a night light would be just fine. We keep the closet door closed with the light on so it projects a small strip of light into our room so I can see DS in his cradle. He sleeps anywhere from 2-5 hours at night, and when I put him in his cradle during the day, he takes longer naps.
  • We bought a clock at target that has a great nightlight function. You just push on the top of the clock to turn it on. Perfect for MOTN changes and feeding. We only turn it on when we go in there so it is completely dark while he is sleeping. We usually get a 5 hr stretch and 3 hr one from him.

  • LO is still in our room. It's dark except for a small night light on the opposite side of the room. My older son has always just had a night light as well. And he has blackout curtains. He has always slept much better in the dark. Tell your husband to turn the lights off!

  • Our monitor has a nightlight on it that's pretty bright, we were using that for the first 2 weeks he was in crib. Then I also read that they don't become scared of the dark until closer to 9 months like PP said. So I started keeping the night light off and he seems to sleep for longer periods in the night. I have a dimmer switch in his room and just turn it up enough to see enough to feed and change him so that he'll fall back asleep better.
  • We have a night light. He's still in our room in a bassinet. I use the Twilight Turtle during feedings. It's enough light.

I would not leave a light on in LO's room. It will be confusing. Also, it way too early to develop a fear of the dark. You would be instilling a fear that's not there. Don't start that.
  • LO is still in our room and DH has to have a light on. He leaves his beside lamp on. I want him to turn it off. She spent nine months in total darkness. I think the light is more for him to be able to see her than for her to not be afraid.
  • I just have a night light in B's room. I usually have the tv on too. It doesn't seem to bother him.
  • We have a twilight turtle that is really more so I don't run into things on my way out of her room and we have fairy lights strung up that I plug in just for changing and feeding since those are a little brighter.

  • I keep her room dark, but her door open. I keep a lamp on in the corner of the living room so I can nurse her on the couch and a stove light on for changing her diaper in the kitchen. She sleeps 5-6 hours the first stretch then after, it varies from 2 to more hours.

  • We have the light on the angel care monitor on all night, diaper changes and feedings I do with just the bathroom hall light on.  It gives enough light to see what I'm doing.  Like others have said - I keep it dark as possible throughout the night so she doesn't think it is time to get up.  When it is time to get up, I make a big deal about saying good morning, turning the lights on, etc.

  • LO sleeps in our room which we keep dark. We are getting a blackout shade for her room once we move her in there. She gives us a stretch of sleep between 6-8 hours.

All I can say is WOW!! 6-8 hours would be a dream, I can't get more then 3 hours from this little guy! Do you BF or FF? I know that can make a difference in staying asleep longer.
  • DS still sleeps in our room at night, he's only three weeks. I have very poor vision and wear contacts that I take out at night with a dog who loves to sleep in the walking paths. So we have a night light on in our attached bath that gives a dim light to the room. There will be one of these lights in DS's room when he starts sleeping in there too. When he needs to be changed we still turn on a dim lamp to see. So far it doesn't seem to bother him. He also naps in the living room where it's plenty bright (if the sun would ever come back out).

  • Our little one is in our room for now, but he cries if all the lights are off, so we started out with one light on all the time until he falls asleep, then we have a bright LED nightlight with a daylight sensor that stays on until we open the blinds.  Unfortunately, my LO has never associated dark with sleepytime and is happy to snooze in the sunshine all day long!

  • In our room at night I have the TV on the Netflix menu for easy viewing during MOTN nursing. When she naps in her room I don't do anything to darken the room so it is pretty bright, but now that it is getting dark earlier I put on a small lamp of she is napping while it is dark out. It isn't overly bright, but it makes it so I don't have to turn on the over head light to get her, feed her, change her, etc.

I have DD1 and LO in my room still because I'm psychotic. Don't worry I'm under doctors care! Lol so I use the tv for lighting when feeding LO or I go to the den. Our room is still kind of dim during the day for naps too though. I'd say just use lighting that helps you see what you're doing.
(It's okay about your DH though. Sometimes LO wakes up screaming bloody murder and DH thinks that she's having nightmares about running out of milk! *face palm*)
