My husband is going to change Lilly so I finally have a minute to share her birth story! A big thank you to
@mmheartspb for being my labor buddy. She did an awesome job and I loved reading all of your words of support and encouragement at the hospital while I labored and afterwards.
Short version: Lillian Verletta was born at 5:59pm central vaginally after 12 hours of labor. She was 8 lbs 2oz and 20" long. So far she is doing great and I seem to be healing well.
Long version: At my 41 week appointment this past Monday, my doctor and I discussed induction. She said she'd let me go until the next Wenesday (the 29th), but would induce me anytime after I hit 41 weeks (this past Wednesday). I decided to see if labor would start something during the week and asked to be induced on Friday the 24th. The hospital was already full that day so they bumped me up to Thursday. I started having cramps and my contractions felt a bit stronger, but they didn't progress to anything. On Wednesday evening, I went out to dinner with my family and had about an hour of very strong contractions 5-8 minutes apart. We all got super excited, but they spread back out by the time we left the restaurant. I thought maybe they would come back at some point, but I didn't feel like they did.
Thursday morning, DH and I got up at about 4 to make sure we had everything and eat breakfast before heading to the hospital. We arrived at 5:30am and we were brought to our room. I got hooked up to the monitor and we saw that I was having pretty consistent contractions about every 3-4 minutes. But, they were not even strong enough for me to always feel and I was having a lot of cramping inbetween them. At that point, I was a "stretchy" 3cm and about 50% effaced, station -2ish. I got my IV then and they started my antibiotics and set the pitocin to a 4 at about 6. Over the next 3 hours or so I started having stronger contractions, but they were not painful yet. We walked the halls as much as I could stand and they slowly increased my pitocin up to 8. I was checked again and was at 4cm and she was still up pretty high. I was in active labor by this point and breathing through my mildly uncomfortable contractions. They decided to break my water after my 2nd antibiotic dose to help my contractions and get her into a better position. The doctor came at 11:15am to break my water. She said I was at 4.5cm and 80% at that point and the actual breaking was pretty quick. I was nervous, but it really didn't hurt. It just felt extremely weird and I kept having gushes the rest of my labor.
Once my water broke, things picked up pretty significantly. I decided that I really liked laboring in the rocking chair and spent most of the next 7 hours rocking and breathing. DH and my mom were awesome at talking me through the contractions and helping me to stay with my plan for as natural a birth as I could handle. At about 2pm, I was checked again and I was at 6cm and about 90%. I was doing my patterned breathing, but it was getting more difficult to relax inbetween them. At 3pm, I got one dose of fentanyl. My blood pressure dropped pretty suddenly with it and I got very dizzy. It scared me, but I got better within a couple of minutes. I was very sleepy and was drifting off between contractions. By 4pm, my contractions were getting very intense and I knew I must be in transition. My doctor checked me at 4pm and I was 8cm, station 0, and almost 100% effaced. I also got a 2nd dose of fentanyl and handled it better the 2nd time. She said it would probably be at least another couple of hours, but it could be faster. Around 5:15pm, Lilly's heart rate was a bit flat so they had me get into the bed and put me on oxygen. At that point, I was having pain constantly and started feeling like I wanted to push. I could barely get through the contractions, but I just kept breathing and rolling around trying to be comfortable. At 5:30, I started to feel my body pushing at the end of the contractions and it felt right. I was checked again and was 10cm and like 99% effaced. The nurse held the tiny lip that was left and had me push her head through. It worked and they went to get the on-call doctor to deliver. I panted through 2 contractions and then it was time to push. It took 3 contractions and 10 pushes to get her out. She was born at 5:59pm, weighing in at 8lbs 2oz and was 20" long. We had skin to skin right away and then I fed her about an hour later once I was all cleaned up.
I had a 3rd degree tear, but I honestly didn't notice it much. We're working of feeding. She is a voracious eater and I'm trying to work on getting her to latch in a comfortable way. We did really well the first day, but then I started to get sore and I have a couple of cracks. I'm learning, but she seems pretty content. Passed all her tests and only has a mild bit of jaundice. We came home yesterday and it is wonderful being at home. A bit scary, but it's been amazing. She is absolutely perfect.
I have loved being a part of this community and I will be around to follow you guys and offer support where I can. This board was not just somewhere for me to have support throughout my pregnancy, but a place full of wonderful friends. I'll miss being over here and I'll be eagerly anticipating each of you joining me over on one of the parenting boards in the future. Thank you all for being so incredibly awesome. Huge ***HUGS***!!!
And of course, cute little Lilly pictures.
