Handing out candy while trick or treating

For those who have gone trick or treating with their LOs, or plan to this year, does somebody stay behind to hand out candy while the other parent goes trick or treating? Do you leave a bowl of candy outside for kids to help themselves? Do you skip it all together? We're supposed to have unusually nice weather for trick or treating this weekend, and I'd love to take DD for a little bit to get more use out of her costume, but DH feels one of us needs to stay behind to hand out candy.  Just curious how others have worked this out.

Re: Handing out candy while trick or treating

  • I have this same dilemma, except DH will be at work so I don't have anyone to stay and pass out candy.

I think we will probably do what @flmama622 suggested. The one year we did leave a big bowl of candy out I suspect that many kids took waaay too much and it didn't last the whole time.

  • last year we didn't hand out candy....my sister (who has a 9 and 8 yr old) usually leaves out a bowl of candy if they both go out with the kids......
this year we don't have to worry about it since we're not really home (having construction at the house- still at ils yay) but we will be at my parent's house for dinner that night, which is across the street from our house...so....
anyway, not sure what we'll do next year...maybe we'll leave out a bowl....we don't get very many kids by our house.....

  • We are going out as a family to the grandparents houses and then to our immediate neighbors right after work so we'll probably be home by 6pm; trick or treating goes until 7:30pm, then we'll hand out candy. We just moved in April to our house so I'm not sure how many kids we will get. In our old neighborhood kids were practically bused in...it was really annoying.

  • We aren't giving anything out this year. Each park has a party, and several of our friends have block parties, plus trick or treating, so we won't be home until bedtime.

We only get to trick or treat with him for a few years, then we have the rest of our lives to stay home and give out candy.

  • DH did it for half the time and when we got to our townhouse I switched with him.
  • Our neighborhood is like 90% retirees so Halloween is super quiet. We always just leave our lights off :(. I think we're going to have to transport DD to a hipper 'hood to trick or treat when that day comes!!

  • Trick-or-treating didn't happen when we were in our condo so this is our first year to hand out candy. We live in an extremely small town and our house is on a small back street. I asked the neighbor how Halloween was here and she told me that the 5 kids that live on this street usually skip us and go straight into town where there are more houses for them to go to. So... I'm thinking we'll take DS to my ILs' and just leave a bowl out just in case someone pops by here.

I remember when I was little though that my mom would always take me and my dad stayed home to hand out candy... or he sat in his chair, watching COPS, while the bowl of candy was on the front step... ;)
