varicose vains

I just had my thirty week check up and found out i have varicose vains....dowm there. She gave me some home traetments to help reduce the pressure. Im concerned about giving birth, will they explode? Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks in advance.

Re: varicose vains

  • I don't think they explode. I don't have them in my or near my vagina, but I have some horrible ones that curl around my thigh and down my calf.

If you are concerned about what may happen during birth, ask your provider or the nurse what birth may do to aggravate the veins and anything that can be done to minimize swelling and discomfort.. It isn't something people talk about in day to day conversation, so it would be a good topic to bring up. But, I think there really isn't much to worry about.

  • I have them also. They are called vulvar varicosities. I had them with my last pregnancy too and no they did not explode during labor. They went away shortly after having baby. I would definitely speak to your doctor about your concerns though because my experience could be different than yours! Good luck!

  • They're not likely to explode... your body can handle significantly more than you realize. They also typically go away after you give birth.

  • I have them and first let me know, I'm sorry!  They are absolutely miserable.  Mine started to show up on my legs around September (I'm due 11/29) and have gotten worse and spread into vulvar varicosities.  I didn't even know they were possible in/down there as it isn't exactly something people talk about but apparently it is more common than you'd think.  My doctor said considering my age, history, and this being my first pregnancy, it is very rare to have them as bad as I do but other than being terribly painful, they don't tend to be harmful.  However, it is possible for them to burst during difficult labor but incredibly unlikely.  I'd just keep an open dialog with all doctors involved in your care.

On another note, mine got so bad that my doctor sent me for a blood clot scan last week (negative) and put me on medical part time at work because she doesn't want me on my feet more than 5 hours a day.  Ugh, it is terribly boring but the only relief I get is having my legs up.  Wishing you the best of luck!  You aren't alone!
  • May I ask what your doctor has suggested? Mine just said there is nothing I could do and she will evaluate me before due date to see if I can birth naturally or if she thinks I'll need a CS which is something I really don't want.

  • Thanks all for the feed back.

My doctor has just suggested getting my feet and butt up at least three times a day. I am still working full time, luckily behind a desk, but still doesn't help.

Overall she doesn't seem to concerned with it. I however am in so much pain some days its just terrible. I have done a lot of research and most times it doesn't cause complications in birth.  I know of a women who had them in her legs and her doctor attributed her early labor to the vains.
