LO talking yet?

Hey ladies, I was curious if your LOs are talking yet and if so what words they say. DD says "Dada" and "Meow" (for the cats) but other than that doesn't say any words, just babbles. We talk to her constantly and read to her, so it's not like she doesn't hear words she could copy, but she doesn't really try.

I know every child goes at their own pace, so I'm not really concerned, but I couldn't help but wonder where all the other Aug '13 babies were at!

Re: LO talking yet?

  • Little guy says a few 'real' words. No (ugh), mom, this, and my fav...here go (here ya go).
But we def have Chinese mumbling going on 98% of the time!
He knows a couple (2)signs from daycare. I don't work with him on them, but I use them when asking "more?" Or "please/thank you".
  • Loading the player...
  • M is a babbler. He will mimic the infliction of a phrase like "I love you," but it will come out "dat too ew." But you can tell the right syllables are there.

Many times I say "one, two, three" before doing some thing. And I catch him making 3 noises before throwing a ball or doing another activity.

I feel like he's close. He watches mouths closely. And he's been making new babbling noises.
  • Not really. At this age, I'm more concerned w receptive language than expressive. I know that they understand me, and the words will come later.

The big one didn't have more than 5 words until 20 mo - then he had his "language explosion" and really started communicating.

We sign more and all done and one of the twins shakes his head yes / no. It's adorable.

  • D has a few words. Mama, dada, papa, ball.. But he is definitely starting to understand more, which is cool to see. It's interesting because I stumbled across a video from back when my older son was 14 months and I was absolutely blown away by how much more he was talking at this point. He was a very early talker so it's hard to compare. D doesn't even have the sounds that my other one was saying at this point. Crazy how different they can be!
  • DD says mommy, daddy, puppy, and go consistently. Other words are hit and miss. She babbles a lot like she's talking to herself so I'm happy with that.

  • DS just started babbling the other day before he would only say one sound at a time. He says mama, daddy, this, that, dog, tada, ball and batman.

  • DS is always talking, but only actually "says" mama and dada. He is very good at getting his point across and loves to have "conversations" with everyone, lol. He's also super animated with tons of hand gestures when he talks. :)

  • He doesn't say any words, really, just lots of babbling (and a kind of "roar" thing?). But he does seem to understand a lot of what we're saying. Yesterday, I asked him about Daddy's car, and he walked to the front window to look at the street in the direction DH's car comes home every day. Or if I ask him to bring me a specific toy, he'll go and find it.

He says quite a bit, but I'm not sure how much of it people that aren't around him all of the time would get. I know his daycare teacher keeps a list of things he says on a regular basis:

    Mama
    Dada
    Gigi (my mom)
Mayme (Jaime, his main daycare teacher)
    Dog
    Eat
    More
    No
    Yes

    Snack
    Bye Bye

    Socks
    Sit Down
    Uh oh
    Oh no

  • She says "mama" and "dada" meaningfully now and has a very authoritative "no" and a sweet little "no". She says stuff non-stop and lets her feelings be know, but is not saying too many actual words. DD1 seems to understand her much better, and gets her things when she is making sounds that seem to be what DD2 actual wants. It is kind of creepy.

This is how our older one was. He was basically speaking sentences by his 2nd birthday. The nice part was that he could always tell us what he wanted.. Now I am learning about the frustration of constant whining because he wants something and not being able to tell me what it is!
  • Our son says "dada" "mama" "bye bye" and "bun buns" (annies cheddar bunnies).  Other than that not really.  But I am not worried.  He definitely understands what we are saying!

  • We have mama, dada, Uck (Huck, our dog), Buh (Beth, his aunt), Cheese. That's about it. He's been babbling more since we've consciously made an effort to rid the damn binkie.

I'm not too worried. It'll come with time. He was an early walker (9 months) so I figure he's still focusing on being super active (hanging from the mantle above the back of the couch anyone?!).

P.S. @BelhurstBride I love your siggy picture of the girls. <3 Too cute!

  • She says "mama" but only when she's crying. Other than that, she says "hi" to every person she meets. Other than that, it's completely babble. She does mimic though. I was calling for my dog and I'd say "Remy!" And she'd say "ahhya!" Right after each time. So she's trying.

  • E is saying Dada, Mama, Gigi (her aunt), baby, hey, yeah, me.  She also says animal sounds when asked to tell what the animal says. She says "mooo", "woof" and occasionally will howl like a wolf.  We have a wolf puppy book which is where she got the wolf sound. haha She attempts to say "duck" but it comes out more like "duh" "duh".

  • My DS is not saying anything.  He babbles and roars, but no distinctive words.  He had his 15 month checkup yesterday and the pedi recommended a speech eval.  I'm concerned it may be too soon.
  • The most consistent ones are mama, dada, and na-na-na (no no no).

He also has gone through phases of saying some other things all the time for a while and then not saying them much anymore - dis (this, while pointing), dat (that, while pointing), aat (cat), Acia (Gracie, one of our two cats), a throaty sound that resembles car.

Babbles all day long with all sorts of sounds and inflections.  Understands a lot and can point out some objects consistently in his books when asked to.

We aren't walking or really talking. I am going to ask my pedi about it at our fifteen month check up. He can sign for milk and sometimes says mil.

My daughter is saying Mama, Dada, Kitty, Bye Bye, Hey, Hi, Woohoo, No, Yeah, Uh Oh, Weeee!, One, Two, Three, and unfortunately Oh S***!
She is quite the talker. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head but I know she says more.
  • Hi, my sons says ta, mum, dad, nan, quack, car not much else though but makes a lot babble so definetly has a lot to say!
  • He's mostly babbling. But he is now saying "momma" and "dadda". I swear my kid tries to let me have it in his babble language. Guess he gets it from his momma ;)

  • My LO is almost 17 months old and says a handful of words. She will also grab my hand and take me to whatever it is she wants to show me as well as mimics sounds. I noticed many of you mention teaching signs to your toddlers...as in sign language? Where have I been that I haven't thought of this and is there a certain program that you subscribe to?
  • Like crazy!!  He won't shut up!  But that's a good thing.  He was a late walker which helped him build up his vocabulary starting before 12 months. By my last count he had just over 2 dozen words (qualified only by whether a stranger could understand the word, if he said it).  And he can repeat several more, even if he doesn't voluntarily offer the word.  We went through a short "uh uh eh eh" phase at 14-15 months while he transitioned to walking but we cut that out by making him at least try to say the word.  Luckily a couple months later he was pro at walking and put his concentration back in the language.  He was due Sep 2014 so I didn't originally start on this board and rarely visit unless I'm looking for something!  Hello!
