Hallo-week countdown GTKY

foxslawfoxslaw member
edited October 2014 in February 2015 Moms
1) Have any Halloween traditions in general?
2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)?
3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week?

My DBF & I are obsessed with horror films so this is our favorite time of year. We are wanting some new ones to watch, so sound off on your suggestions/favorites! B-rated movies are strongly encouraged. The cheesier the better.

Re: Hallo-week countdown GTKY

  • 1) Have any Halloween traditions in general? Pumpkin carving and trick or treating
    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)? STM, trick or treating at town scary again, she was Alice in Wonderland last year and this year is *sigh* Elsa
    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week? Supernatural is about as scary as I can handle!

Just started watching supernatural! I'm enjoying it so far! @Dani_Love‌

I also hope we have a thread on Halloween so I can see all of your LO's costumes. :)
  • 1) Have any Halloween traditions in general?
I used to always go to Halloween parties but won't be this year... And I assume those types of parties will soon be replaced with ToTing and stealing candy from my kid.

    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)?
We are taking FIs DD to do ToTing on Main Street in our town the day before but we don't have her this Halloween :( so we will be hanging out and passing candy which I am good with for this year. The next day we are headed out of town so we don't be up too late (wow... Party girl me just rolled her eyes at this new chick).

    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week?
Yeah I don't do that... I like suspenseful movies but can't make myself go full horror. I do however have a love of Alfred Hitchcock so that's my exception. Maybe I'll track one down.

@foxslaw for suggestions, I'll offer you a classic, a cult classic, and a newer but less famous one.

    The Shining.

    Army of Darkness

    Slither

If you're a horror buff you'll have seen them all, but I enjoy the crap out of them all!
I haven't seen slither, actually! I'll have to check it out. You performed in Rocky Horror? My inner drama feel thinks that's just THE COOLEST. @sugahcookie01‌

Edit: the shining & army of darkness are just everything.
  • Oh and ps @foxslaw I think you'll really like Slither! It has Nathan Fillion who I just love so freaking much.

Oh, yeah. Definitely a Nathan Fillion (firefly) fan.
  • I am mobile and can't c&p.
    1. Just the usual. Watching horror movies with DH, jack o lantern carving, pumpkin seed roasting and trick or treating for the kids. Tonight we will be trying on costumes so I can do any Las minute fixes if necessary. This year we have a black cat and a witch (they wanted to be a pair). I must admit, I am really glad they picked spooky costumes (or at least not princesses ;)).

    2. My town actually has a lot going on this time of year so we have one fun activity planned for every day this week (carnivals, hay rides, school Halloween party, etc). On Halloween we will be going out for an early dinner at a local restaurant that has free food for kids in costume on Halloween. Then, trick or treating at Mimi and Papa's house and then around our neighborhood. This is our first Halloween in this neighborhood but I have heard from several people that it is really great for trick or treating. I know we have a few neighbors who have put up pretty elaborate Halloween displays already so I am excited to see how this goes.

    3. We haven't really planned anything but DH and I love horror movies so I am sure we will find something. The girls love Nightmare before Christmas and have already watched it at least 4 times over the past 2 weeks. I also have to watch Beetlejuice every year. Halloween tradition. :)

  • 1) Have any Halloween traditions in general? Just trick-or-treating and then handing out candy! My Dad and I always used to watch the Canucks game on Halloween when I was a teen (I know, too cool right?), but the games are on too late to do that here now.
    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)? We trick-or-treat early, around 6:00, let Ella have a couple pieces of candy, and then bedtime routine as usual. After she's asleep, we eat all of her candy. Mwahahahaha!!
    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week? Nada! I am not into scary stuff at.all.

  • I'm glad I'm not alone in totally planning to eat most (all) of June's candy.
  • 1) Have any Halloween traditions in general?   When we were growing up, my grandparents always came over on Halloween and would come out with us and my parents when we went trick or treating.  Then we'd come back and have donuts and hot chocolate while laying out our candy, trading, etc.  So I've continued that as much as possible.  My parents don't come over (which is a whole separate post) but my brothers and SILs do, so we take DS out trick or treating, then come back and have donuts :)
    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)?   We'll take DS trick or treating to a few houses nearby (mostly just the neighbors that we know) and then hang out and pass out candy.
    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week?   I don't do scary, but we'll probably watch The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown this week.

    1. No traditions but hoping we will start some next Halloween!

    2. Handing out candy or going over to see my nieces and nephew dressed up. I'm hoping I feel ok to head out to a country bar and see pp I haven't seen forever! Dress up optional but don't think I'm going there unless I wear a scarecrow costume I have. Not fitting in my others :)

    3. Nothing scary. Don't know why I watch when I do because my eyes are usually covered!!

  • 1) Have any Halloween traditions in general?  We go to our local Halloween festival the week before Halloween, do 2 pumpkins the week of Halloween (we carve one and do one more "kid-friendly" type craft with the other), and go trick-or-treating on Halloween.  When we get home, we always watch Hocus Pocus. :)
    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)?  We are trick-or-treating!  We did it last year, but we are so excited for it this year b/c DD seems to get it so much more. :)
    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week? I'm not a big scary movie person, but I watch Hocus Pocus a LOT! ;)

  • Traditions:
Pumpkin painting and carving. It's always been my favorite thing to do aside from handing out candy.

    What am I doing:
We'll find a local Halloween event for kids and probably take him to 2 or 3 houses in the neighborhood.

    Scary stuff:
The walking dead is my scary stuff these days. DH doesn't like scary movies and DS is too young for even the fun scary movies.

  • 1. We usually do a pumpkin beer and pumpkin carving night at our house the week before Halloween, and we watch scary movies all month long.

We had a tradition when I was a young kid that I can't wait to pass along to my LO. In my house, Halloween had its own version of Santa Claus/the Easter Bunny called "Little Witch." After trick or treating Little Witch would come collect candy, and it was up to us how much to give her. If we gave her half our stash, she left a small toy. If we gave her all our candy, she left a big toy. Once I got older I realized what a genius idea this was on my parents' part!

    2. We might be going over to a friend's house this year. I'm really excited for an LO to dress up and have fun with next year!

    3. We've already been watching tons of scary movies this month. We have pretty much exhausted Netflix's collection of classics and good horror movies, so our selection this year has been very B list. You're Next, Devil's Pass, The Last Days, Contracted are some of the ones we've watched. I haven't been too impressed with anything.

    1) Have any Halloween traditions in general? Carving pumpkins, roasting the seeds, decorating the house with spooky Halloween stuff
    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)? Handing out candy to the neighborhood kids-except I am bummed it is supposed to be 40's and rainy on Friday :( glad I didn't buy candy yet bc that will really cut down on our numbers
    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week? I watched Carrie (the original one) a couple of weeks ago! The Shining also never gets old. Here's Johnny!!!

Could I also propose a F15 spooky story post sometime this week in addition to the cute costume post? We did the stories on another board I was on and it was a lot of fun :) selfishly I love spooky stories

    1. No traditions here.

    2. We don't get any kids that come to our door, so no candy to pass out (which is sad, but there aren't a lot of kids in the neighborhood). I plan on wearing this tee to work, but other than that, it'll probably be a quiet Friday night.

    3. Hmm, maybe I'll watch Poltergeist (not scary anymore, but it is a classic).
Awaiting our bundle of cute chaos.

Totally on board with this as well!  Last year DS ate one or two pieces of candy, then we snagged the rest.  One of the advantages of toddlers' short term memory!  I'm figuring this is probably the last year we'll be able to get away with that before he starts asking where all his candy went!

    1) Have any Halloween traditions in general? My brothers and I would go trick-or-treating with our three cousins who were the same age. It was always a blast, I was just going through old pictures. Turns OUT, my dad and aunt carried cans of beer in their pockets and one house gave out nips to the adults. How genius is that? In the words of my dad "That shit is cold and boring."

    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)? We'll be handing out candy--our neighborhood is near an elementary school so we get a lot of kids. Last Halloween we ended up in the ER with DH so hoping NOT a repeat of that, just some quiet bell-ringing while I try not to eat the bowl of candy.

    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week? Neeeeewp, nothing scary for me. Give me The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown any day.

    1) Have any Halloween traditions in general?
My H and I use to have a bunch of friends over for pumpkin beers and pumpkin carving contest-- since moving to TX our little evening has just been the two of us. But still as much fun!
    2) What are your Halloween plans?
I wish I could drink all the pumpkin beers but I will be flying to WI for my our baby shower!
    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week?
I HATE scary movies but do enjoy classics like Hocus Pocus (not really scary though.)

This is a FANTASTIC idea!! I may steal this tradition!

    1. No real traditions other than Cider and Charlie Brown. I may decorate this week if I feel up to it.
    2. I would normally be going to a party, but plans change with a LO on the way! I'll be spending my last pre-baby Halloween in my happily home-bodied state: passing out candy. I live across the street from an elementary school, so I should be plenty busy.
    3. I'm another wimp who doesn't like scary. I did watch Cabin in the Woods the other night, but that's probably going to be it. I'll stick with me sit-coms, thank yoo very much!

  • 1. Used to spend Halloween at my mom's. Pass out cand, have pumpkin pie and cider.
    2. Now that our friends have babies we will be going yo our one friends house to pass out candy and eat a bunch of snacks! No punch for me.
    3. I'm really not into scary movies but my DH husband loves them so I'm sure I'll be forced to watch a couple. I'm good with hocus pocus and a Charlie brown Halloween!
  • 1. Pumpkin carving, roasting seeds, on Halloween my mom would make sloppy joes and fries (because it was easy when the door bell kept ringing). I'm trying to keep up that tradition. I hate passing out candy so I always tried to avoid it.

    2. My H will be OOT on Halloween so my sister, mom and dad, and I are taking Norah trick or treating. My sister is going to sleep over. It'll be an early night because I have to work the weekend :((

    3. We don't like scary stuff so probably nothing like that. Maybe kid specials that are on tv.

  • 1) Have any Halloween traditions in general?
I like to dress up and hand out candy. We like to decorate, and made some tombstones for the yard and a dummy to hang from our tree. Upping the ante each year.
    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)?
We are trying to finish getting decorations up ASAP. Typically we like to watch horror movies and hand out candy. DS is still a bit little to go ToT, so he will dress up with DH and pass out candy. DS is going to be the Hulk and DH is Captain America. Trying to get DH's twin to put on his Thor outfit and join the fun. I'll be on a plane flying to Ebola Heights...I mean Dallas, so nothing too festive for me. Probably playing Zombie dice in the airport with my sister while wearing my skeleton t-shirt (pic in HDBD thread). If I was home I'd totally be Black Widow, though.
    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week?
Probably not watching too much scary stuff until DS is asleep, but DH is mostly in charge of the horror movie department. He LOVES scary movies and Halloween in general.

DH really likes Dead Snow - B horror movie with zombie Nazis. There is Dead Snow 2 that had a limited release in theatres recently, unfortunately none near us. John Carpenter's The Thing (1984) is DH's fav horror movie. Others he likes are Warlock, The Lost Boys, Mosquito, Puppet Master, Screamers.

    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)? I'm dressing as Bonnie Swanson from Family Guy. My husband is autistic and hates dressing up, so having him dress up like Joe is just like having him get dressed for work. He also loves Family Guy, so he's definitely on board. We have a Halloween party at work every year, and we got invited to a friend's housewarming Halloween party. Otherwise, I'll be handing out glow sticks and candy to the maybe 15 kids that come to our door.

    1) Have any Halloween traditions in general? For the last 2 years we've carved pumpkins with DH's nephews, parents & younger brother.
    2) What are your Halloween plans? Are you STM's doing the trick-or-treating thing? What are you FTM's doing for your LAST childless Halloween (bet you wish you drank more of that black punch last year, eh)? I think DH and I might go to the drive in w my parents and hit up the quadruple feature. Annabelle, Halloween, The Thing & Friday the 13th. Only problem is, we'll see if I can force myself to leave the house unattended that long at night after what happened last week...
    3) What scary stuff are you guys watching this week? Whatever is on AMC's 13 days of Halloween. Also, perhaps all the movies mentioned previously at the drive in. Ooooh, and maybe, like @Mrs. Zee said, The Shining!

  • 1) nothing crazy. Hayrides, pumpkin picking and carving, might make some 'scary' cookies or other treats tonight or tomorrow. We usually try to hit a fall/scarecrow festival or safe trick or treating (sponsored by the local high schools) event in October, this year we attended 'Boo at the Zoo' at the national zoo in DC this past weekend.

    2) I'm a room rep for both my older children's classrooms so I'm helping with one of the class halloween parties on Friday and attending the school parade. Trick or treating with all the neighborhood munchkins will be early, and then we'll probably watch a spooky kiddie movie and hit the hay since we have 3 birthday parties the next day. I have weirdo kids who don't like candy much (but LOVE trick or treating), so DH will be taking most of the candy haul (excluding Hershey bars, kit-kats, and lollipops) into work on Monday!

    3) I love scary movies, but I think the walking dead (last night) and American horror story (I missed last week's episode so I have to catch up) will be the only shows we have time to watch this week. Oh, and also looking forward to the Modern Family halloween episode.
