3rd Trimester

3 hour glucose test tomorrow and nervous about it!

I am 29 weeks pregnant and I failed my one hour glucose test last week (they did not tell me the #s so I don't know how badly I failed). I just found out today and I immediately jumped the gun to schedule my 3 hour appointment for first thing tomorrow morning. I am not trying to cheat my way into passing the test because if I really have GD I really want to know so that I can monitor it. I am nervous though because I ate like complete crap yesterday (fried foods and soda) and am really worried about that affecting the test.  I have read some information about having a super healthy diet for 3 days prior to the test (no carbs, no sugar and tons of water) so I just want to make sure that I am doing the right thing here. Do I need to reschedule my appointment or will what I ate 2 days ago make no difference? Thanks!

Just take it. You fast the night before, and what you ate the previous days won't matter as far as results go. You either have GD or you don't.

  • I would wait a few days. Eat normal stuff but don't eat obvious food that can effect your blodd sugar like soda. I must say I had ice cream the night before my 1 hour test. I totally forgot but I had scheduled the test. I still fasted the recd 12 hours and failed the test horribly. I was convinced it was the ice cream although everyone said it couldn't be bc I fasted. Well I had to take the 3 hour and it was brutal. I scheduled it a week later and ate normal but no ice cream or sweets. I ate lots if fruit though. Anyway I only fasted for 3 hours bc I woke up in the middle of the night very hungry so I ate some chicken. I still passed my 3 hour test. I'm convinced it was the ice cream that impacted my numbers. Long story short id wait a few days to get whatever made you fail out if your system. GL!
  • A LOT of people fail the one hour and pass the three hour. Don't cancel your appointment because of something you ate TWO days ago.

I'm taking my 3 hours glucose test tomorrow too, a little nervous about it. I really really hope I don't have GD. The MFS seems to think I'll pass, but there's always that chance. Eesh.. :(
  • I understand being nervous. When I failed my 1 hour I thought for sure I'd fail my 3 hour. I just had a feeling. But I passed! And my Dr told me to eat a high carb diet for 3 days before the test. They gave me a diet of 200 grams of carbs or more. I tried to follow it as best as I could but was hard with nauseua/throwing up. So my point is you should be fine if you ate crappy for 2 days! Even if you ate healthy if you have GD you would fail the test.

Advice though if you get nauseous a lot be prepared to try to nap or distract yourself during the test. I almost threw up the drink! Its double the glucose compared to the 1 hour and it didn't settle well. Hope you guys pass!!!
  • I failed my 1 hour and passed my 3 hour. What you eat days prior doesn't make a difference. They are testing how fast you metabolize the sugar solution over a period of 3 hours, so what you ate several days ago will not matter. I'm sure the reason I failed the 1 hour is because I stupidly had a soda with my white-rice-filled chipotle burrito about an hour prior.
