Sleeping positions

okay so I've been sleeping exclusively on my sides, flipping from side to side all night. My shoulders are in so much pain because our bed is really meant for back sleepers. Is it enough to lay so my shoulders are flat and prop a pillow under my hip to tip my torso on an angle? Or do we need to lay completely on our side? My shoulders are screaming for relief

Re: Sleeping positions

  • Mine shoulders and hips hurt. I sleep what ever way is most comfortable without being directly on my belly or back. Hope you get some relief.

I was told as long as I am comfortable I can lay on my back. I am more of a side sleeper, but I wake up every morning with sore hips lately.

  • I do pretty much exactly what @lizzybean‌ does. I sleep with a pillow between my thighs sort of angled halfway between being on my belly and my side. I will sleep on my back for short periods but it gets uncomfortable for me.

  • Sleeping on my side absolutely kills my hip on whatever side I'm laying on. I still sleep mostly on my stomach, with my knee strategically angled to keep the pressure off. I'll be belly sleeping until I absolutely have no other option. My midwife told me that if I physically can sleep on my stomach, it's fine.

  • I have two beds, one upstairs that is super firm but sooo comfy on your stomach/back. But it hurts my hips/shoulders on my side, I sleep kind of half on my tummy half on my side. After about three days I move to the basement where the bed is soooo soft it makes my lower back hurt, I sleep on my sides the whole time, and then I move back upstairs when my lower back hurts.

Its a pain and H and I don't always sleep together but I would be sooo sore if I didn't switch back and forth.

  • I sleep in whatever position is comfy. Usually kind of on tummy with leg tossed out to the side.... I use a wedge pillow for when I lay on my side, to hold the weight of the belly....

  • I was just coming to look for a post about being uncomfortable. Always makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one. Shoulders and hips are killing me. I seriously am thinking a big comfy recliner sounds perfect for the rest of the pregnancy.
  • My midwife said that if you don't feel anything painful or weird sleeping on your back, it's fine. Sometimes I wake up on my back, it's just my body deciding what feels best. I agree with @lizzybean‌ and @WanderingA‌ - sleeping with a pillow between my thighs makes it much more comfortable. Hope you get some relief!

  • First pregnancy I tried to be diligent about sleeping on my sides and bought all kinds of pillows to help with my shoulders/hips suffering. Gave that up and just used the pillows to prop my hips at an angle so I wasn't completely on my back but my shoulders were flat, as OP suggested. This pregnancy I just sleep however is comfortable and that's usually on my back with my head and chest elevated so I'm not completely flat on my back. As PPs have said, your body will tell you if you need to switch positions if you do sleep on your back/tummy.

  • I flip between sides and on my back. I have pillows all around me. Talked to the doctor about it and he said he wasn't all that worried about sleeping on my back because he is positive women have been sleeping on their backs for thousands of years with no problems. Haha. He's super laid back if you can't tell.

  • I pretty much sleep as close as possible to tummy sleeping. I lay on my side with my leg draped over a pillow and my belly propped on the pillow. Sometimes I wake up on my back and similar to others, my doctor said he wasn't concerned about how I slept. Dh and I are also sleeping in separate beds so that I can have the softer bed.

  • Well at least I feel less guilty about laying on my back every once in a while to give my shoulders a break. I'll find some comfort, somehow. Maybe I can convince DH to rub my shoulders? Not gonna hold my breath... Lol
