Thoughts on Xander

Hi there. I lurk often, but have never posted on this board. Just looking for thoughts/opinions on the name Xander. We are having DS#2 in Feburary and are at a loss for names. Coming up with DS was hard enough. Middle name is leaning towards Charles (family name). But nothing is 100%.
TIA

ETA: I meant to type Xander.   Opps!

Re: Thoughts on Xander

  • I personally love the name Zander. Good choice :)
  • Loading the player...
  • I like it :-bd
  • I have never liked Zander as a fn or a nn for Alexander. Sounds very child like. I have a hard time seeing Zander on an adult.
  • Prefer Xander to Zander. I am okay with it as a standalone name, but I like it better as a nn for Alexander.

I am pregnant with DS2, so I feel your pain! Boys names are tough for us.
  • DS is named Xander, so I obviously like it. :-)

    Xander: November 30, 2010
    Ramona: June 14, 2013
    Ursula: November 1, 2014

  • I don't mind Xander as a standalone name. It's nms, but I don't think it's a bad choice.

  • I love Xander as a nn for Alexander but I think it can stand on its own too.

  • I'm not a fan of Xander at all. I love Alexander although it's a little overused

  • It's ok. Very trendy and it's hard to picture Xander as an adult.

  • DS is Alexander, nn Xander.  It was a compromise - I like traditional names, DH likes trendy names.

I used to work with a Zander, full name Alexander. I prefer the Z but that's probably because he is the only one I've ever met.

  • I really, really strongly dislike the name Xander. It's a bad nn of a gorgeous name.
I think Alexander Charles sounds awesome.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • I like it. I would prefer Alexander with a nn of Xander.
  • I can't not think of Xander from Buffy. I don't imagine your son's generation will have that association, though. The name is nms, but there's nothing wrong with it. I like Alex as a nn better.
  • I like it as a NN for Alexander. Alexander Charles is very distinguished. :)

Agreed. Sounds like something a child would call themselves if they were making up a new super hero. And paired with such a nice, classic name like Charles - I feel like they really don't "fit".
  • I think a guy would like to have a superhero name more than a distinguished one. My high school boyfriend's name was Stephen and he wanted to change it to Xavier. Xander may seem trendy, but it's so common now that kids/adults of that generation will think it sounds fine along with all the Jetts, Zanes, Liams, Zions, Princes, and Jaxons (names of baby boys in my fb feed). The days of needing a distinguished name for boys are kinda over. Nowadays, the video gamers, like Stephen, are the parents and want super hero names for their kids.

  • I really like Xander (much prefer spelled with an X). And Xander Charles is a great name!

  • Love Xander, but I was a huge Buffy fan. It's so refreshing from all the Alex's that are out there.

I prefer the Z too, but DH prefers the X.

ETA: All but one Alex I know is female, and I met that Alex after my son was born (a friend's 18 year old son.)

WTF? So you dated one weirdo in high school who was obsessed with X Men and that is the reasoning why the whole world should abandon distinguished names? I'm sorry but that is probably the dumbest thing I've heard in a very long time. Sure, super hero/comic book names are cool when you're a teenager (or still living in your parents' basement) but the vast majority of actual adults do not think traditional and distinguished names belong in the Smithsonian. There are only so many comicons out there where one can wear their adult Flash jammies to, but then those people have to be in the real world. If you are one of the handful of actual people who are professional gamers, developers or illustrators fine, but probably Stephen there isn't. The real world needs real adults with real names to be doctors, lawyers, teachers and accountants.

OP. Love Alexander Charles NN Xander.

  • I really like Xander. It sounds good with Charles too.
