Trouble TTC

IVF Blastocyst Day 5

Hi!

We are doing our first round of IVF. I'm 30, have PCOS and trying for 16 months with fertility medication and 3 IUIs. So far have had good news. They retrieved 30 eggs and fertilized 23. On day 3 we still had 23 embroyos and several looking strong with 7 and 8 cell divisions so we are waiting until day 5 to transfer.

My question is should we transfer one or two embroyos on day 5? I think if we have a strong looking embroyo we will only transfer one. Has anyone waied until day 5 and only had average or less than perfect embroyos and if so, how many did you transfer?

Thank you for the advice!

Re: IVF Blastocyst Day 5

  • Welcome, congrats on some great retrieval and fertilization results! There is a group of IVFers on this board, and also more IVFers on the Infertility board, many of whom have gone through the decision process of one vs. two.

From reading and researching, if there are two embryos, the second embryo has an extra 10% chance of helping a woman get pregnant if it is tranferred in a separate cycle from the first. But obviously, transferring both at once gives a higher percentage for that first transfer cycle as compared to transferring just one. I hope that makes sense.

This is probably a good conversation to have with your RE, as well, since a lot depends on your age, and whether you have any special risk factors for twins. And of course, a big part of the decision is your preference regarding twins - for example, twins would be my absolute dream because I am so afraid we won't be able to get pregnant with a sibling, but for some women their family would be complete with just one, or the time/energy/financial pressures of twin newborns is too much,or they have a unicornuate uterus or some other physical contraindication for carrying twins, etc.
