Cloth Diapering

Normal or ocd

I feel like today is the day of "is it normal" so here goes.

E is definite in that sensory issue stage... Socks hurt her toes "so bad, so bad," she freaks if her diaper is too tight (probably makes her sweaty,) she can't stand her fingers to be sticky, etc.

But she is so darn OCD sometimes! Mh put her down for a nap, and she just started screaming bloody murder because I left my cup in there. "Mommy cup! Mommy cup!" It didn't belong in her room. Same if a puzzle is on the floor, or the golf club isn't in the golf bag. When she wakes up from naps or in the morning, she must put her teddy on the pillow, fold her blanket and hang it over the crib, turn off her fan, etc. she cannot function until the things have been completed properly.

So... Toddler love of routine? Or OCD?

  • I vote normal annoying toddler behavior.

    Ditto.

I have the same issues with my E.

She has a melt down if I take her backpack out to the car for her.

  • I think true ocd is marked by repetition (like pp said, having to turn the phone off and on again three times in a row or something) and stuff that doesn't make sense, like having to tap every light pole as you walk past.

  • I would say probably normal. I remember my niece at that age, who I lived with at the time, being very particular about things and freaking out if they weren't just right in her eyes. She would obsessively try to put her doll baby blanket in the cradle over and over again. She usually couldn't get it just right so someone else had to do it for her so that she would calm down. She was particular about other things too. She's a fairly normal 9 year old now :)

  • Ok. She is repetitious, but in what I would call a normal toddler way. Either bc it's fun to turn things on and off or bc she is frustrated she can't get the blanket to lie flat.
Soundsike it's normal (frustrating) behavior. Thanks.

  • I haven't reached the toddler stage yet, so no idea. However this post brought back memories of my childhood when I would FREAK out about the sew line on socks "hurting" my toes...I must have been 4-5ish at the time. I would freak out so bad that my grandmother took apart the stitching on the toe and sewed them back together on the top of the foot instead of the toes. How weird!

  • Yep, N is like this, too. He has a set routine that has to be fulfilled at bedtime every time. If I'm ever just too exhausted to do the whole song and dance, I have to warn him ahead of time that we're doing things a little differently. Thankfully he's also pretty laid-back and goes with the flow most of the time.

  • @missmimsyy‌ I have no idea, but I bet they tried that first. I also remember throwing a fit about footed pajamas and having the feet cut off on all of the PJs with them. Kids are weird.

  • I think that sounds normal (agreeing with everyone else)

I have a lot of OCD tendencies.  Not diagnosed, but I've never sat down with a doctor to delve into it-and I think it's just that perfect routine that toddlers love.  I try to skip tooth brushing with M if we are running really behind with bath/bedtime and he practically grabs onto the door frame and points ot his brush so we don't forget it.

  • Normal. I think that many people have "OCD tendencies" and most toddlers do. At my moms daycare, the kids all have their preferred cups, beds for nap time, spots to sit at the table, etc.and all hell can break loose if something should get in the way of any of those routines!
