GMD prefold/fitted sizing question

Hi everyone! I'm a FTM and I'm really excited about CDing. After a ridiculous amount of obsessing and lurking this board, I'm pretty set on using prefolds, workhorses and covers for the newborn stage. I'd also like to get a few BBs and pockets to see how I like those for later on.

My question is about the sizing of the Cloth-eez prefolds and fitteds. Obviously, I have no idea how big or small our baby will be so I'm a little bit anxious about spending too much on newborn sizes. I was wondering if the sizes listed on the GMD site are pretty accurate. For example, they say the yellow edge workhorse fits from 9-15 lbs. Does it fit a 9 lb baby fairly well or is it going to be super bulky? If you get snapless, it is possible to get a decent fit with the yellow edge on a slightly smaller baby (say 8 lbs)? How about the prefolds? Pretty much the same question - is it possible to make a yellow edge prefold work for a baby that's a bit under the 10 lb suggested starting weight?

Maybe I should just get a half dozen of each size fitted and a dozen each of the orange and yellow and then order more once the baby is here? Does that seem reasonable? I guess I don't have a problem supplementing with disposables if I need to, but it would be nice to have a good stash prepped and ready before he's born.

Oh and a side question - does GMD ever have sales/discounts?

I only have experience with the red edge. My daughter is 22 lbs and they still fit great. I'm one of the weird people that like the snap version. I got 6 nb size to try but i won't know how they are until baby gets here. With all that being said i love them. I'm not sure about sales. I think they do black Friday specials. Good luck. I just got the yellow snap workhorses, and they fit my approx. 14 pound 2.5 month old pretty well. They would have been bulky on him as an 8 lb NB I think. Fwiw I started out with Imagine fitteds in xsmall and small bc they were cheaper. I also went with snapless on those. The xsmall fit until about 12 lb. The smalls fit pretty early and are slightly less bulky than GMD yellow edge. The down side is that they are slightly less absorbent and will not fit as long. They also don't have the same resale value as GMD.

I have only ever purchased the size 1 prefolds. There's no way it would snappi on my 18 month old, but I've never needed bigger sizes for absorbency.

I would say that you should pay attention to the actual sizes of the prefolds, instead of weight ranges. Those are always just suggestions. I think prefolds will be bulky on every newborn, but just remember that it's not uncomfortable for them

Oh you're right - the Imagines (I think these are the ND Snapless fitted now?) are cheaper and they have a better fit range on the small (7 - 17lbs vs 9-15 for the GMD small). More options to consider :P

I had gmd newborn workhorse with snaps in the old style, no soaker tongue. I had to fold þe rise down and use a snappi on my 6.5 pound newborn for the first two weeks until his cord stump fell off. I really prefer the kl0s during the cord stump early weeks. I switched to smalls around 4 weeks because they fit, not because the newborns didn't fit any more. At 12 weeks and a little over 11 pounds we're still comfortably in small workhorse. I dislike prefolds in general. I can get a much trimmer fit with an origami folded flat. And my two year old wears the same flats padfolded on pockets or covers.

On the prefolds, you can just fold down a little if they are too long early on. They may be a little bulky, but the sizes difference to me isn't enough in the smaller sizes to not just start with the second size. Later you may need bigger sizes to fit around your little one.

Thank you all for the answers and advice! I'm going to check out the Imagine/Nickis diapers again and look into flats before I make a decision!

I love GMD prefolds and workhorses. We have tended to size up in workhorses a little before we hit the upper end of the range we list. Our first was a big baby and never really fit newborn sizes. Personally I'd get mostly small workhorses. For prefolds I think the ranges are pretty good. I would get a bunch of newborn prefolds- even if they're too small, they make awesome burp cloths/ doublers and we use ours all the time.
