OB out on vacation on week 39

We had decided that I should be scheduled for CS at 39 weeks but I just found out that she'll be out on vacation that whole week... which means that my scheduled CS will have to be at 39+5.  Unfortunately, due to some changes that my Dr. Office went through recently, she's the only one in the practice that still does obstetrics. I'm a little worried that if I happen to go into labor sometime during that week and have to do an emergency CS - she won't be there!  and who ever happens to be on call at the hospital will be doing my CS.  I'm not worried about the competence of the doctors at the hospital, it's one of the best in town but I feel very uncomfortable with the idea of having a "stranger" attend to me ....  Is that unreasonable?  What would you feel/do?

I don't necessarily think it's unreasonable, but I also sort of think there's no point worrying about it. You have no control over when you go into labor or whether or not your primary doctor can be there.

It's also very very common for people to NOT be attended by their primary doctor for the birth. I would love it if my doctor is the one who is there, but I know that I just have to go with the flow. I plan to be as prepared as possible so that I can communicate all of my concerns and wishes effectively to someone who doesn't know me well.

  • My Dr only goes to the hospital on Mondays, so that is why my c-section is scheduled then.

However, if I go beforehand, well...it will be whoever is on call that day.
  • I would find out who the other possible Drs are and meet them to see if you are comfortable with them preforming the procedure. If it was my OB, as much as I like her, I'd switch doctors. Or ask if there is a possibility of scheduling the CS for right before she leaves on vacation.

  • IMO, your comfort level with your OB is very important during pregnancy because you see him/her so often. As far as who actually delivers the baby? Well, as long as the doctor is competent, it's not a huge deal to me. I've never had a c-section, but I don't think they take very long (right?). Your nurses and whomever else you have with you during delivery are the ones who set the mood, help out, etc. Obviously, it would be nice to have your OB who you know, but I don't think another doctor delivering at the last minute is a huge deal.
  • A friend of ours had a c-section with her twins last year. She was very early when she went in to labour and I know she was upset that the OB on call wasn't one of the OB's from the practice she was going to. In the end though I know she was really happy with the results (it just so happens that it was my OB that did the surgery).

I did take her advice and make sure I've at least met all the OB's on call at the hospital so if mine isn't there I at least know who I might end up dealing with.

  • That's a god idea. I'll try to meet as many of the OBs that may be on call ahead of time. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • I tried scheduling for rigt before her vacation but that gets me in week 38 and she doesn't recommend going that early.

  • I won't meet the person delivering me until I go in to L&D. I am only seen by a NP. A little part of me is worried, but I know I can't do anything about it.
  • @Robs Baby Girl   ^^^ that exactly ^^^   I'm also seen by an NP and will not know who is delivering my baby until I show up in L&D.

  • So far I've had a visit with all but one OB at my office. I've mainly been seeing MY OB, but I've had an appointment with each other OB in case I do go early.

When I had my daughter the OB on call wasn't mine, but I really didn't care. There were too many other emotions going through me at the time. The last thing I was worried about was who delivered the baby.

  • I'm already starting to calm down about it. It's just that the first time I found out, I panicked an little bit. I understand that this happens in emergency labor situations everyday and the OBs on call are more than capable of handling of the situation. If I can meet the scheduled OBs ahead of time, I'll try to do that bit I'm sure everything will be alright. Than you ladies for your responses.

  • This makes me think of "Knocked Up" :). Of course she wasn't a csec but still. I totally get your anxiety. There is definitely a doctor in the practice I go to that I would not feel comfortable having do my Csec. Very glad to be scheduled with the doctor who delivered my other two via csec. I feel like she probably knows her own work.
  • i was really lucky with DS and my "team" of doctors were a pair of residents and their attending physician, all of whom i saw on rotation during my checkups, and i was assured that it would be one of those three to deliver DS.  i didn't go to an OB practice with him, just kept seeing my GP.  it turned out that it was my regular doc (who i started out with...i only met the rest of the team after getting pregnant) and the attending both who oversaw/handled DS's birth.

this time around, there are 8 or 9 OBs at the practice i go to, and it could be any of them on D-day.  my own doctor is only in the hospital one day a week, so my odds of having her deliver beanie are pretty slim, lol.  i'm just rolling with it.  there really isn't anything i can do about it, and while i'm comfortable with my current OB, i've still only seen her for two brief, routine appointments at this point, so i have no idea what she'd be like in L&D.  it's a crapshoot.  i'm sure that whoever does your c-section will be competent.

  • My doctor was on vacation when I delivered DD. Who knows if she would have even been the doctor on call or not. She had another doctor cover for her for my post partum care. I ended up liking the other doctor even more and he is who I choose to be my doctor this time. I had a vaginal delivery, not a C-section but I felt the nurses did everything anyways and the doctors are there for a short time so IMO it doesn't matter who delivers :) try not to stress :)
  • Is there any way to do the RCS at 38 wks 6 days if it means your doctor will be there? I thought you said your doctor was the only one in the practice that does obstetrics?
    image
  • Yes, she's the only one in the practice that does OBstetrics but the hospital she's affiliated with has several other doctors who do ... And they always have somebody ok call for these kind of situations.

  • I don't think they can do that unless there is a specific medical reason to do so.
