For those of you who had babies that were born weighing over 8 lbs, did your baby ever wear newborn sized clothes? I'm looking at the clothes and 0-3 size looks really big for a newborn but it is meant for babies 8+ pounds.

  • Me too! Also newborn diapers. Size one says it's for 8 pounds plus, but they look MASSIVE next to the newborn ones.
  • DS was 7 lbs 15 oz and 20". He wore newborn size for a week, and that was pushing it.

For this baby (doctor said was 13.5 percentile based on ultrasound, but they told me my son was 15th percentile and he came out 60th percentile), I'm taking a NB onesie for pictures and a 0-3m footie pajama for coming home.

  • My baby was 8.9 lbs and wore NB clothing briefly. I only bought one box of NB diapers ahead of time though, I don't think we needed anymore than that before we were into size 1 diapers.
  • Just saw my friend and her 3 week old yesterday. He is 8+ pounds and she says he's still wearing newborn outfits and 0-3 were still too big.
  • DS was 9lb 14oz. He was able to wear some nb size clothes but it all depends on the brand. He was only in a few items for the first 2 weeks (and only bc he lost weight!) and then he was completely in 0-3 month clothes. We probably could have skipped the nb size. This baby's coming home outfit is 0-3 months bc I'm assuming I'll have another 9 pounder.

  • I'm so glad you asked this!
  • So is it more based on length and weight of baby? Gah! So confusing!
  • I was a giant baby as was DH and our siblings so while I want to be prepared if I have a normal sized baby, I really expect that I will have a bigger baby. So, that's why I'm wondering about this. Thank you all for sharing!

  • Great question, I will be stalking this thread all day!
FTM, but Noob is on track to be over 9 lbs if he comes on scheduled date instead of early, but I'm packing NB and 0-3 for going home outfit just to be safe.
  • Just from looking at the newborn clothes from my shower,  it has to depend on the brand.   Some look like Barbie doll clothes......and some look like they are 0-3 month size.

The tiniest ones are so freaking tiny.....I don't forsee us using them at all.

As for diapers,  DH filled the nursery organizer with the NB size ones and they are so freaking tiny.    Not sure if we'll use those or not,  but I am sure we'll try.

  • Both my 9 pounders and my 8 lbs., 9 oz'er wore 0-3 from the start.

  • DS was 7p14oz, so not quite an 8 pounder, but close.

He came home in newborn and wore it for almost a month.

He only lost 3 oz so his weight was not a factor.

    Also, he was 20".

  • DD was 7 lb 10 oz and 20 1/4" long. She wore NB size for the first 6 weeks so she had hit 8 lbs at some point during that time.

  •  The three babies of mine that were 8 lbs or over-wore 0-3 right from the start. They were butterballs :)

This time I'm just bringing 2 outfits, a nb and a 0-3. I also had a skinnie-minnie baby so there is no predecting with me haha!
  • I voted 8+ pounds and wore newborn. The only exceptions I can think of brand-wise is gymboree and gerber. She also still grew out of newborn in length before width. She actually grows out of everything in length before width. She got her daddy's long legs :)

  • My daughter was only 7#9oz but she was literally SWIMMING in the newborn outfit I brought for her to wear home.

  • DS was 7 lb 4 oz & wore NB clothes & diapers for about the first 6 weeks.  Then, we didn't get much use out of the 0-3 month stuff because he grew FAST & was in 3-6 months before he turned 3 months.

I know people whose babies are born in the 9 lb range & they went straight to 0-3 month clothes & size 1 diapers.  You never know how big your baby will be, so with DS we only had like 3 newborn sleepers, just in case we couldn't use them.  We waited until we knew he could wear them for a little bit before we bought anything else!

  • I agree that it depends both on the brand and the baby. My kids have all been long and lean and outgrew clothes lengthwise long before they filled them out.

DS was 7lbs 6oz and 21" long. I ended up buying him a preemie onesie just so he would have something that he didn't swim in. It only fit him for a week or two, but it made me feel better.

DD1 was 7lbs 15.9 oz and DD2 was 8lbs 1oz and both wore NB for several weeks depending on the brand of clothes. 0-3M was way too big for them in the hospital. I expect this LO to be the same way, so I'm only bringing NB outfits.

  • My son was 9lbs - I bought a newborn sized coming outfit for him before they started to tell us he was going to be about 9lbs.  I put him in it, but we had to stuff him in - it was tight.  The few other things newborn sized he never wore so we were pretty much right in 0-3 - some of it was a little big but not huge to the point he couldn't wear it.  He was 21.5 or 22 inches - so tall - but weight-wise newborn was too small for him.  We used newborn diapers - a small package and went right to size 1 within a week or two.  This time I didn't even buy newborn clothes or diapers (they are telling us this guy is large again).  Watch he'll be a small baby and we'll have to run out and buy newborn clothes and diapers.

This is my plan.  Baby clothes take up pretty much no room, so I'm just planning on bringing one in nb and one in 0-3 months.  This is our first, so I have no idea how big she'll be.  DH is a big guy, but his mom says he was just an average sized baby and I was like 6 lbs some odd oz, so I'm not thinking she'll be too big, but who knows.

  • My first was 9 lbs, 21 inches, but we had been told at a late ultrasound that he would be around 6 lbs. Luckily, I packed both nb size and a 0-3 for coming home, I'm not sure why. We ended up giving all of his newborn size clothes to a friend who had a 5 lb baby right after ours- he never fit into them. We had a big box of nb sized diapers, and we were able to use all of those. I would suggest not cutting the tags off of your nb clothes, just in case- maybe just wash one or two so that they're ready, and bring two options for coming home in different sizes. Size estimates can be very wrong in both directions- there's really no way to know for sure until the baby is born.

  • I wanted to add, if you have Gerber clothes, definitely assume they are a size LOWER than what they are labeled!  They are TINY compared to every single other brand out there!  All my Gerber 0-3 month stuff is with the newborn stuff, 3-6 month stuff is with the 0-3, etc.  Otherwise, you will get the the next size up & realize they won't fit into it & will never get to wear it!

  • My son was 8 lbs., 4 oz. at birth and wore 0-3 month, but they were big for him. Newborn sizes would have worked for the first few weeks, but I was just clueless about them with my first. This time I have some of each because I have no idea how big this one will be.
