Which Is More Important: Exact Time or Every Three Hours?

I currently pump at work three times at 9, 12 and 3.  Most mornings my exclusively breastfed 6 month old LO eats at 6 so then pumping three hours later works out well.  But, some mornings LO eats at 7 and I am wondering if I should then push pumping back to 10, 1 and 4?  I have heard some say the body is trained to pump at the same time every day but I have heard others say it is the every three hours that is important.  Today LO ate at 7 and I pumped at 9...got much less than usual.  Next time LO eats at 7 I will try not pumping until 10, but was just wondering if anyone else had any insight into this question.  Thanks!

I try to just stick to every three hours since last feed. But when I get busy at work I only make it for two pumping sessions. I will stick to two unless my supply drops then I go back to pumping 3 times. Now since my lo eats around the same time all day I have to stick to every three hours because if I pump at 4 before I leave work and I get home by 5:30 and he wants to eat I have already taken all the milk. You just have to do what works for you. I find it so rare that people find the time to pump 3 times while at work. I should add since I miss the 3rd pump session at work I will feed my lo before bed, then pump before I sleep for the night. That still leaves me around 3 hours before I feed him next but my boobs will still know it needs that extra milk.

  • My pump times vary pretty widely depending on my schedule.  I pump in the morning (either before or after LO eats, so anywhere from 5:30-7am), then twice while at work.  This could be anywhere from 10am-12pm for the first pump, and 1pm-4pm for the second.  My supply has been fine with this irregularity.
  • I feed LO between 530 and 630 when she wakes then pump at work (730) before my shift starts and again at 1230. If I don't get the 15 oz I new I sometimes add in a pump at 3. I've noticed supply changes but not based on if I alter my pump times 30 min either way
