scared for my next c section

I am 18 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. My first 2 were both emergency c sections, with my first he was a high risk pregnancy because of too much amniotic fluid, he tried coming a few month early but they were able to stop it and then I never got any braxton hick, so I was induced at 42 weeks! They induced me and broke my water and I did 26 hours of labor and 2 hours and pushing and no progress, they thought it was cause he was so big, he was 9 pounds 12 ounces so I had an emergency c section. My second it was a planned VBAC, my water broke 2 weeks early and a normal pregnancy,  I did 16 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing and once again no progress, so I had another c section he was 7 pounds 8 ounces. So this time is my first planned c section! Now here is the scary part pain medication doesnt work well on me. My 2 epidurals didnt work correctly, yhe firdt did almpst nothing and the second was on and off pain. So both c sections I was knocked out for. This one since its planned they will do a spinal block instead of an epidural.  Im terrified I will feel it! Has anyone else had a simular expiriance? Or had both an epidural and spinal block? Were they thst different? My doctor is trying to ensure me it will be different. Thanks

Re: scared for my next c section

  • I had a planned c-section with DS - spinal block worked very well & the doctors are right there so if something isn't right they can fix it. I could feel nothing within seconds of the spinal block. Ask your doctor how soon after surgery they take the spinal out. My hospital left it in overnight, I feel like not trying to move to soon really helped me recover faster. Everyone who had emergency c-sections told me that my experience was very different from theirs, so try & stay calm. The doctor will knock you out again if they have too.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't have proper pain control with your first two babies, but since this section will be planned you have plenty of time to talk to your OB and your anesthesiologist to figure out a plan.

  • I had a planned c-section with my first and have another with this baby. My spinal was amazing and I felt nothing. I can't compare but I'm sure a planned c-section will be a much different experience then your first two emergency ones. I have nothing but positive things to say about my cesarean. Hopefully this birth will be better for you!

  • As a nurse and someone who is also having a 3rd c section I felt my first as I had an epidural, but with the spinal you get coverage or you don't, compared to the epidural can work only partly. I had no pain with my 2nd, actually I was numb for like 12 hours after strange feeling. Good luck you will be fine.
  • I had a planned c section with my first due to breech presentation and had a spinal. My second I had a successful VBAC and had an epidural. I would take a spinal over and epidural any day. My current pregnancy I'm going for no pain meds and water birth because I hated getting my epidural so bad. Good luck mama.
  • The good thing about planned vs emergency is that you have the luxury of time. You'll be able to get the spinal, wait for it to kick in, tell them if it's not working, etc before they start cutting.

I had a c/s because my son was breech, and FWIW after the spinal I barely made it lying back down on the table before I was having trouble moving my legs. I felt nothing, but by the time I got to my postpartum room I could feel them, move around in the bed, etc. Very successful spinal.

Good luck! I hope you have a better experience this time around.
