Warning- this was not a smooth labor experience, so if reading about complications will freak you out, skip to the adorable pic at the end
:x
Isabelle was born at 7:23pm on October 17 via c-section (unplanned) after 30+hours of induced labor. She was 8lb7oz and 21in at birth.
DH and I got to the hospital for a scheduled cytotec induction at 9pm Wednesday. By the time we got settled in, it was about 11:45pm and the resident administered the cytotec. When they hooked up the monitors we found out that I was apparently having contractions but not feeling them; don't know how long that was going on in the days prior. As a result of frequent, though not productive, contractions, the doctor wouldn't administer anymore cytotec.
8am Thursday- my doctor comes to check my progression- 2cm dilated, 75%effaced. He was pissed that the resident did not consult with him or the on call doc for our practice overnight about not doing the cytotec as ordered. Basically we were in the hospital for 12 hours for no reason. We started pitocin. Pitocin continued for 12 hours. During the day DH and my mom hung out with me. Again, I was having contractions, but nothing painful. At 4:30pm got checked again- no progress. It was sooo frustrating. Decided to stop the pitocin to give my uterus a break. Finally got something to eat after almost 24hours of water and ginger ale!
2am Friday- Hooked back up to the pitocin. 8am- 3cm dilated, still 75%, cervix high. Doctor decided to break my water. That was a strange feeling! It felt like things started to progress from there. Contractions started to get more painful. Labored without pain meds throughout the day. Cervix dilated to 4-4.5cm. I didn't get an epidural in hopes that progression wouldn't stall.
3pm Friday- no progression from 4.5cm. Cervix still high. Doctor starts talking about C-section. My body is exhausted from laboring for 2 days. DH was a trooper throughout- helping me move around and get into different positions to encourage baby to labor down. The dr suggested I get the epidural to maybe trick my body into relaxing. I gladly said yes. I had started to get the shakes from lack of food and exhaustion.
5pm- Epidural is in. I'm relaxed. DH and my mom went to grab a quick dinner while my best friend stayed with me. Dr. is scheduled to come check again at 6:30- if there is no progress, we're off to the OR for a section.
Then things start to go bad- baby's heartrate started to drop from 150s to 100s. It fluctuated back and forth for a while, so the nurses were keeping a close eye, but not overly concerned. BFF called DH to tell him to get back quickly just in case. By the time he got back, I was hooked up to oxygen to help baby's heartrate, but she kept dropping to the 100s. The nurse tried tickling her head and having me adjust positions side to side. That's when she felt baby's nose or hand instead of the crown of her head. The on-call doctor (whom I never met before) got called in, he confirmed it was her nose, she was sunny-side-up, and that c-section was the only way to go.
Things progressed quickly from there. DH showed up, he freaked out seeing me hooked up to 2 internal monitors, oxygen, catheter, and having someone check the baby every 2 minutes. I can't blame him, we had 30+hours of basically no action, he leaves for 20mins and comes back to all hell breaking loose. Baby's heartrate dropped again and it looked like we were heading for an emergency section. There were at least 6 nurses, the OB, and anesthesia moving very quickly around me. Someone threw scrubs at DH, he was so nervous BFF had to talk him through getting them on. I was getting pumped with anesthesia through my epidural and my body started uncontrollably shaking to the point I wish I had a belt or something to bite on because my teeth were chattering so badly. Thank God, baby's heartrate stabilized again, and things slowed down a bit. One nurse said- we're not an emergency, but an urgent c-section.
I was glad DH was able to be in the OR with me. He looked over the drape as they pulled our baby girl out! (We were team green) He then went over with her to where they cleaned her off, checked vitals, etc. I was still shaking uncontrollably and tried to look over at them as much as possible but my neck and head were like a bobblehead. Finally they brought her over and unstrapped my arms (tied down to stay out of the surgical field during the section). DH hung onto her as my shakes started to subside. Once we got to recovery, we were able to do skin to skin for over an hour. Our parents and siblings were waiting downstairs and they were able to come up to see us for a few minutes in pairs. The nurse was really great about letting us have them visit before we left recovery, since it was after visiting hours in the post-partum unit.
While my labor experience was not one I would like to repeat, I was very happy with the care I received and DH and I are over the moon about our new little girl!
