Obgyn recommendation in Northern Virginia

edited October 2014 in December 2014 Moms
I am moving to Arlington next week and new to this area. Does anyone know a good doctor's office to go to whose Drs delivery babies at Virginia Hospital Center? I'm 31 weeks and one practice had already refused my transfer. I feel kinda helpless now.

Thanks for your help in advance.

FYI there are people from all over the US, Canada, and the UK on this board. Also, most people are not comfortable sharing their location info, let alone what OB they use. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

You should try using google or call your insurance company and ask for a list of places in the area that take your insurance.

There are also Local Boards on this page that might be more helpful.

You could try the local board for this.
This and also agree with calling your insurance. I would hate if you took a recommendation and ended up paying out of network fees.

  • Thank you for your tip! I think I should find somewhere more local to ask this type of questions. I did do a lot of researches beforehand based on my insurance plan. I'm here more to see if there is any good advice according to their real experience.

You would be better off relying on reviews you read online rather than trying to get people in real time to tell you what dr they see. Stranger danger much!?

Meh.  I don't think she can steal my identity if I mention my practice.

@freecy - I am with Physicians & Midwives Collaborative Practice and have been very happy.  I am not entirely sure if they deliver at VHC as that is not where I am delivering with them.  I know they have one other hospital affiliation other than mine, but I can't remember which one.  Is there a reason you're tied to VHC?  A girlfriend of mine is delivering there next month - I can ask the name of her practice and PM you.

ETA: As others have said, make sure to check your insurance.  When looking for a new provider for any service, I always start there.  Mine has an online search function to see who is in-network and close to me.  I'm sure most insurers offer the same.  Then you can click on the providers to view more details like their hospital affiliations.  Lastly, check reviews on google, zocdoc, etc.  dcurbanmom.com is a great resource for reviews.

  • Good luck @Freecy. I'm sure your insurance company can help out. Look for a doctor that has privileges at the DC hospitals as well, especially Washington Hospital. INOVA in northern VA is good too. You're in good hands with those two.

Thank you so much for your detailed info. I did some research on the one you are using now. They are really big and look professional. I think their only affiliation is Alexandria Hospital. Though some reviews said you would have no idea which Dr. end up delivering your baby since there are too many doctors in this practice.

As to the VHC, to be honest, I don't have to stick to this one. I chose it because people said it is a very personal and caring hospital to have babies there. Also, its location is convienient for us. I mean Alexandria's location is not bad, either. I'm really appreciate that you could let me know which dr your friend is with now.

    Thanks again!

Thank you for your advice! I will keep an eye on those you have recommended.

I use Arlington Women's Center. They are located at Virginia Hospital Center. It's a big practice but I've liked all of the doctors there.

Thanks for your advice! I'll try to call them tomorrow. People do say they share calls with other practices. Is that true? What do you think of their admin staff and nurses there? :D
  • I'm too far west to help you out with Arlington, but wanted to wish you luck and welcome you to NoVA!

Thank you so much! You are so sweet!

Millennium Gynocology has a few offices in the NoVa area.... Not sure of any of then are close to you. Their Alexandria office delivers at Virginia Hospital center. I like their practice :) Good luck! I am moving to FL in a month so I will be struggling to find a new OB with only a month left :-/

Oh man. You are even closer. I hope you can find a new ob you really like soon. It's such a pain to find a new dr since there are so many things to take care of. Well, thank you so much for your recommendation. I will definitely look into it.

    Thanks again and good luck!
  • VHC is the best because I believe they're the only nova hospital that guarantees private rooms for delivery/recovery. I had a great experience there having DS.

I see Northern VA Physicians to Women but I actually think they won't take new patients who are past 20 weeks... Good luck!

That's the one refused me. Mmm... That's why I'm still struggling among those practices to see which one will take me and I am happy with.

Thanks for letting me know how much you like VHC. It makes me feel more secured that I chose the right hospital.

Wait what? What other hospitals are you talking about?
Yeah, that's not correct.  Inova Alex only has private rooms.

  • Can I just be jealous of those of you who live in the D.C./NOVA/Maryland area.

Good luck finding a practice you like, OP!

Is it all the traffic you're jealous of? ;)
I like the area. I'm used to metro traffic having lived in the Bay Area, Atlanta and So Cal. Atlanta traffic freaked me out for several months after moving there. I like urban and progressive areas. I also miss fall weather on the East Coast.

  • Here's a link covering this exact topic from DC urban mom which is a fairly active local board with a lot of moms/moms to be from NoVa:

    https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/419355.page

I can't help with personal experience because I got my care on base when we lived in NoVa but just wanted to offer another great resource for when baby gets here and is older:

    https://kidfriendlydc.com

It's a weekly rundown of kid friendly events in the DC area. It was like my bible for knowing what was going on and getting out of the house.

I loved living in NoVa. It's a great area to raise a family. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for your great suggestions which are very informative and helpful. I went through the reviews and called the practices. Now I know which ones will take me and I'm going to schedule an appointment soon. Really appreciate your help! I am going to enjoy my life in NoVa.

The nurses and admin staff have all been really friendly and helpful. You pretty much rotate through all the doctors and midwives there since you don't know who will be on call when you deliver. Once you have met everyone then you can pick who you want to have the rest of your appointments with. I think this is pretty standard for large OB offices. I have liked everyone I've met and wouldn't mind if any of them were there for delivery. I feel like having friendly nurses at VHC is more important during delivery since we'll be spending more time with them so I really picked the practice based on the reputation and location of the hospital.

Thank you for the details. It's very helpful.

I like urban areas and metro systems, too. Super convenient.
