Breastfeeding

Post breast reduction nursing.

Any moms out there? I had my surgery about 18 years ago. In hindsight, I should have waited. I wasn't done growing and it seems my wonder boobs have grown back--and bigger than before! Anyway, of course, there is no way to know if I will be able to nurse until I know! It'll even happen or it won't. I don't know anyone else who has had a reduction pre baby. My scars are anchor shape and from what I understand, the type of surgery does make a difference. I'm wondering if anyone has any success or advice.

Re: Post breast reduction nursing.

  • I had a breast reduction about 12 years ago and mine have grown back, too. ugh. Well, I don't know if I'd consider this a success or not, but I AM able to BF my son; however, my supply leaves MUCH to be desired.  Despite my best efforts, I can only pump an ounce or two max. and ds seems to need both boobs and then supplement to get full.  It's been a very frustrating process, but I've done the best I can.  My surgery just took too much tissue for BF'ing to go smoothly.  I also have an anchor scar as well as a reduced nipple size with reconstruction.

Best of luck to you, it's 50/50.

  • I have the same issues as stated above. My scar is around the areola, no tissue was taken. I can only pump about 2.5 ozs max out of my left breast and 1.5 ozs out of my right. Some is better than nothing though. After struggling with supply with my first child I was convinced I would never successfully breastfeed. However, with my second I am living proof it can be done with a lot of persistence and acceptance that you will have to supplement with formula!
  • It's actually not the incision that makes a difference- it's how your doc removed the tissue.  In a free-nipple breast reduction, the nipple is taken off the breast entirely and put back on as a graft.  This severs all the milk ducts, so you cannot breastfeed after this type of reduction.  With a pedicle reduction, the nipple is left attached.  You can breastfeed after this type of reduction, but your supply may be affected.
